Microsoft's New Windows 10 Upgrades: A Serious Warning
Forbes ^ | June 1, 2019 | Gordon Kelley

Posted on 06/12/2019 6:31:37 AM PDT by upchuck

Windows 10 is finally receiving the upgrade everyone wanted and desperately needed. Or is it? Because now the details are being dug into, it is not what hundreds of millions of users will have expected.

Microsoft recently promised Windows 10 users "control, quality and transparency" for both minor updates and major upgrades with the release of Windows 10 1903. But the reality is actually far more complicated and it is Windows 10 Home users (who account for the lion’s share of the OSes 800M-strong userbase) who are hit hardest.

CNet breaks down the new rules, and Windows 10 Home users learn they “can't automatically defer any updates”. All you get is the option to manually pause updates for up to 35 days. Moreover, this is a process you must keep repeating every week to apply this delay to every new update. But the biggest complication and the one with very serious consequences is Microsoft will apply “end-of-service dates” to Windows 10 versions. When that date is hit, the next updates will be installed automatically, even if you have manually deferred them. In short: there’s nothing you can do about it.

My first awareness of Microsoft's lack of ethics was when they updated my laptop and added ads to the games, then telling me that to stop these ads, I must pay more for the premium status.

I am seriously looking into Linux at this point. I'll need to talk to my computer tech guy to see if I can get it installed on my laptop.

Now that support for W7 is coming to an end I’m seriously thinking ‘bout upgrading to W7.

If you connect via WiFi you can set your connection to “Metered Connection” and that will prevent updates. But you can never connect your machine to an Ethernet port (because you don’t have the Metered Connection option).

I have a half dozen Win 10 machines that have been running for periods up to four years now - none of which have ever updated.

Other possible solutions: get a Mac, or install Linux.

Read the third paragraph of the short excerpt. It clearly says you CANNOT stop the upgrades in Win 10 Home. Of course, you could always turn off wifi.

Alternately, use your wifi firewall to disallow connectivity to Microsoft's upgrade servers.

Don't know how long Win 10 would continue to work under such circumstances, if you disable its ability to "phone home".

While the Windows 10 updates haven’t seemed to affect overall performance of my desktop, they do not play well with third party software. My copy of Photoshop Elements ran fine when I first installed Windows 10 Pro, but in the shuffle of updates it quit working. In researching online I found it was a common problem and despite trying several suggested work arounds and hacks I still haven’t been able to get it functioning. Adobe hasn’t been of any help either. I can’t imagine the problems running an essential third party business application when a Windows 10 update crashes the system.

It probably would not work long disconnected from the mother ship. More apps are headed in that direction, too.

Just downgrade to Win XP (or soon Win 7) and you’ll never have to worry about updates again!

You are WRONG!

I have my W10 machines set to metered as well but MS WILL force ‘important’ updates even on a metered connection.

It is impossible to prevent.

“...none of which have ever updated.”

Again, you have had updates forced down to your computers - just look up recent updates on any of your machines. There will be updates from this year.

Well, I appreciate your passion but I don’t think so.

I’m sitting here looking at one of my machines now. If I go into Control Panel/Programs and Features and then “View installed Updates” it shows an update for Adobe Acrobat and four patches that I manually installed back in 2016. Nothing else.

So I went into Settings and then Update and Security. The right pane shows that “Updates are available” and “Downloading updates - 0%”

If I click on “Details” it shows dozens of updates (as it should since the “phone home” feature isn’t disabled) and “waiting for download”. Mind you, some of these updates have been waiting for three years for the magic condition (Ethernet connection) to occur so that they may commence.

As long as I keep this machine on WiFi with “metered connection” checked they will never download and install.

There is a program that you can download that will stop Windows 10 from updating, and there are regedit tweaks that can be applied to further stop Windows 10 from updating.

They aren’t going to send a SWAT team to your house to install it from a DVD-ROM. Well, at least I THINK they won’t.

Wouldn't be surprised by this if they did. MS is pretty heavy handed these days.

Where’s the upgrade that made it look and work Win 7?

They sent me an Alienware 17 with 10 on it and I hate its guts.

It’s sitting on a shelf gathering dust.

Other possible solutions: get a Mac, or install Linux.

Or you could run Win 7 Pro 64 bit till the day you die. That's my plan. So far so good.

The sky is falling... the sky is falling. M$FT is ending support for Win 7. Whatever will we do?

Before you jump out the window, ponder this: when was the last time you called M$FT for support on anything, including Win 7? For me: never.

Sorry, but I have a hard time getting excited about something I never used.

You're thinking about Classic Shell. No longer in development but still available.

So here's the thing: after years of dealing with Windows I finally installed Linux Mint on one of my computers. There was not too much of a learning curve and I have used it for over six months being nearly mostly satisfied

with certain exceptions that eventually caused me to install Windows 10 professional on a different drive. Linux Mint has been exceptional protection on the Internet for me. I go places where no man dares to go.

However, there are applications I have used for years and depend upon that Linux does not accommodate no matter how hard I've tried. Applications such as but not limited to Dragon Naturally Speaking. I need a speech to text application and there is no Linux app that does that for me. So it's a trade-off. Windows 10 when I need certain apps or Linux Mint want I want secure surfing. I bought a second box, used and cheap --also a backup system, so I don't have to deal with dual boot hassles and simply switch boxes according to my needs.
