Dominican Republic (AP) Beloved in his hometown, David Ortiz traveled the dangerous streets of Santo Domingo with little or no security, trusting in his fans to protect him. Big Papi's guard was down even at hotspots like the Dial Bar and Lounge, where the Dominican business and entertainment elite can cross paths with shadier figures in a country where fortunes are often made in drug smuggling and money laundering.

Now Friday ‘bout a week ago
Leroy shootin’ dice
And at the edge of the bar
Sat a girl named Doris
And ooh that girl looked nice
Well he cast his eyes upon her
And the trouble soon began
And Leroy Brown learned a lesson
‘Bout messin’ with the wife of a jealous man...
Well, you counted incorrectly.
His name was Rico
He wore a diamond
He was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancing there
And when she finished, he called her over
But Rico went a bit to far
Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot
But just who shot who?
You know, I was wondering what a ball player could do to get someone so worked up they’d want him dead. Well... That’s as good a theory as any...
“His naiveté almost cost him his life.”
He’s not walking out of the hospital yet.
Two college friends from D.R advised me not to travel there for vacation, even around the resorts because of alcohol, drugs, corruption, bribery by law enforcement, robbery and worse. A Fox news journalist in the D.R two nights ago reported how the same evening someone in the news crew, driving back in the early evening to the resort after dinner at a nice restaurant needed help with directions. He was robbed.
I heard he was messing with another man’s wife, who hired two thugs to gun him down.
He grew up there. I am not sure naïveté is the right term. He was clearly a targetand not for robbery. This appeared to be more of a hit than random violence.
He’s lucky he got off with just a couple bullets instead of taking a sip of bottled water from the hotel’s mini bar.
Ah, a Dingy Harry moment, of sorts, Caribbean-style?
