Animals Cat advocates say declawing is ‘brutal.’ New York lawmakers just voted to ban the procedure.

Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (D-Manhattan) celebrates Tuesday as her bill banning the declawing of cats is passed by members of the New York Assembly as part of Animal Advocacy Day at the state Capitol in Albany. (Hans Pennink/AP) By Michael Brice-Saddler June 4 New York is one signature away from becoming the first state in the country to ban cat declawing, a practice advocates say serves no benefit to felines and is done typically out of convenience.

The bill, which passed by a wide margin Tuesday in the state’s majority-Democrat Assembly and Senate, would impose a $1,000 fine on veterinarians who perform the procedure for nonmedical purposes. That means pet owners in the state would no longer be able to have their cats declawed for cosmetic, aesthetic and other ostensible reasons.

One of several lawmakers to champion the measure, Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (D-Manhattan) was visibly jubilant after the vote. She has previously rallied against declawing and condemned its invasive nature in a statement: “It is not like getting a mani/pedi,” she said. “It’s a brutal surgical procedure.”

Declawing is cruelty.

That's ignorant. All my relatives declaw their cats. Not one suffered because of it. They are pampered little kings and queens.

But, this issue utterly trivial when the same bastards just legalized killing humans until birth.

Declawing a cat is cruel and basically a death sentence if they ever get outside.

Their owners know that and don't let them outside. Problem solved.

They don’t love babies except the babies of illegals that further their agenda.

I am a genuine animal lover, have been all my life but the socialists have elevated animals far above humans. No value on human life that doesn’t further their agenda. Sick.

If you feel the odd need to declaw your cat you might as well pull it’s teeth out while you’re at it.

Cats don't need claws to eat. Teeth, though, are very useful for eating.

What's cruel is to make cats unappealing to potential owners and having to kill them because they can't be declawed.

Myself, I would never get a cat declawed.

But seriously, New York Legislature, you have nothing better to do?

The cat declaw industry must not have sent in enough lobby money to line the New York Dem’s back pockets.

Isn’t there a constitutional right for a cat to perform a declawing? I know its got to be there right beside the right to abort...claws can be such a burden for a cat you know...

Connecticut....Massachusetts...New Jersey....Pennsylvania...Canada: at least one of them is just a short drive for most New Yorkers.

We had several cats declawed on the front when I was a kid. All ran, played, lived with our dogs and acted content until they died of old age.

Around here, we call cats roaming outside “Coyote Bait”. They don’t often make it home. When it is claws versus jaws, the coyotes seem to win.

This debate has been accelerating over the last year or longer. I own two cats that I rescued as abandoned kittens in the streets. They are both indoor cats. We love them, feed them, give them free shelter and a great health care plan. But they ain’t tearing up my furniture. No claws. That’s the deal.

Did you ever see any bunch like the Dems that want to ban damn near anything except for truly evil, like killing babies?

i have both clawed and declawed cats. My furniture has been ripped up badly in the past. I don’t have the schedule to stay home and use a spray bottle all day long. The cat i have now, she’s a ripper. If?when i get new stuff, she gets declawed.

Keep the claws AND the cat inside. They are killing machines. Up to 3.7 billion birds per year.
_______________________________

I have plenty of birds. Besides living on the Mississippi Flyway, I have 80 acres of woods and meadow, an
ever-increasing multi-generational family of cardinals that have condos in my 100-year-old lilac bush, several generations of robins and bluebirds who spend every spring attacking my front windows and this year, an indefatigable thrush who spends all of daylight attacking the windows in my kitchen. The red-headed woodpeckers have never learned that aluminum siding is not going to produce a meal.

Around here, we kill more grackles ourselves than the cat has ever dreamed of.

The cat, on the other hand, keeps the population of mice and voles in check. The dog does his share of possums and bunnies. Neither attack the squirrels, although the dog thinks he might, someday.

Both cat and dog team up against feral cats. Somehow, over 45 years, three dogs and more cats than I care to list (several who were concurrent), we manage to have a perfectly healthy animal biome, complete with birds of all types, including plovers and red-winged blackbirds, which nest on the ground. Name the animal, from turtle to eagle to deer, and a bear or two and it has been known to live here. One lone red wolf, as well. Eagles, geese of all types, ducks, crows, ravens: every one has enemies and everyone has defenses and they continue to live and breed.

Now, if you want to ban an animal from nature, I nominate coyotes. They nearly wiped out our local foxes, although a few very bright ones still survive. If you need another, try raccoons. They ravage every bird nest they can reach.

Imagine if no bird was ever killed. You’d never eat another cherry or berry, at least not without fighting off clouds of hungry flying dinosaurs. Everything would be covered in a layer of bird waste. You’d need to net your tomato plants.

Cats are part of nature. They need to fear hawks and owls and the occasional eagle. They are threatened by coyotes and wolves. Left to their own devices, all manage to live comfortably on the same planet.

Agreed. We stopped declawing our cats 25 years ago.

Easy to see how political ideology can murder hundreds of millions with ease when priorities such as this are present.
