I love when someone who has a perceptive take.
Most sports fans only root for the name on the back of the jersey when the one on the front has the right name on it.
I’m not suggesting that players don’t become personal and real to fans, nor that you can’t admire a great player on other teams for their successes, but for the most part there is something quite tribal about sports, and these people wouldn’t give you the time of day if they didn’t need you to buy tickets.
There’s that, and also it is an outlet for tribal instincts that modern society has suppressed. We can’t go and pillage the town next door anymore when we want to show our dominance so we do it vicariously by watching our team beat theirs at sports.
Yep. Vicarious tribal warfare.
