‘Dark Phoenix’ Bound To Lose $100M+ After Worst Domestic Opening In ‘X-Men’ Series: Here’s Why
Deadline ^ | June 9, 2019 | Anthony D'Alessandro

Posted on 06/10/2019 6:32:04 AM PDT by C19fan

Dark Phoenix was not the X-Men movie that moviegoers were looking forward to: Critics showed that with a 22% Rotten Tomatoes score, while audiences demonstrated that both in exits (B- CinemaScore, lowest ever for the franchise, and an awful 69% positive on PostTrak) and with their wallets, only spending $33M stateside, the lowest debut ever for the Fox/Marvel mutant franchise.

Even though Dark Phoenix is the No. 1 winner around the globe with $140M –down substantially from the worldwide launches of X-Men: Days of Future Past ($262.9M), Logan ($247.4M) and X-Men: Apocalypse ($166.6M), finance experts tell us that the tale of Jean Grey will burn out with an estimated $100M-$120M loss after ancillaries, off a combined production and P&A estimated cost of $350M+ (which includes reshoots). Final global B.O. is projected at $300M-$325M, with one film finance suit telling us “If it drops like a stone, $285M. Don’t forget it was a holiday in China, and even that was pretty low ($45.7M).”

I heard the star of it that plays Sansa Stark was saying she wouldn’t work in Georgia because of the abortion law. Hopefully after this she won’t work again and she will do some soul searching.

Movie was about on par with most of the recent XMen fair... Nothing fantastic, pretty meh... again, like most of the more recent XMEN movies..

Honestly, it hasn’t been marketed nearly enough or well...

IF you weren’t around in the 90s when the Dark Phoenix storyline originally was written, you probably would have no idea what it was...

They shoved it into Xmen 3... terribly.. it should have been an entire movie of its own back then...

The comic book original was actually late 70's/early 80's. In order to do such a long story arc justice, it should have ideally been a miniseries. I have not cared much for the X-Men films of late either. Sansa Stark does not strike me as a good choice for Jean Grey.

Turner was also the dimwit who dissed fans for complaining about GoT.

You’ll never see any actor do or say things like that, unless they’ve already “made it” and have “FU money”. Never fails. Never.

Hell, she’s a British liberal and probably couldn’t find Georgia on a map.

The whole Marvel superhero thing is getting over cooked. X-men are getting beaten to a pulp trying to squeeze more money out of the franchise.

I’m old, but I enjoyed the comic books when I was a kid. The superhero movies in the first wave were fascinating, I loved them. The Christian Bale Batman movies, the first Spiderman, the original X-men, Iron Man, Thor, great stuff.

X-men epitomizes what is going wrong with all of them. The story wanders, the alternate timelines are confusing, and replacement actors dilute the product. I just watched X-men Apocalypse the other evening. It was terrible, I mean really bad.

Hollywood has no ideas, and their cash cow is starting to go dry.

Why would any adult watch a comic book via film?

Saw it and can definitely see why it will be a loser for MCU. All of the acting was fine, but the story line left a considerable amount to be desired.

IMHO MCU has been in decline with regard to film quality when they released Black Panther. Infinity Wars, End Game, Captain Marvel, Dead Pool 2, and even Guardians of the Galaxy 2 were all poorly written and lacked the ingenuity that the story line deserved. DP2 was a rehash of the original and GotG2 displayed none of the hallmarks that made the original a classic.

Supposedly one of the reasons they did so many reshoots was because the original ending was too similar to a couple of the Marvel Studio movies. Also, at some point during production, it must have become clear that Fox was selling the property to Disney and the characters would be taken over by Marvel Studios. Seems like that might have dampened enthusiasm for it.

I expect the X-Universe will be rebooted again, this time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where they will be integrated with the rest of the Marvel cast. Given how Fox let the property fizzle out, I don’t imagine Marvel will make the new interpretation anytime soon. In the same deal Disney acquired rights to the Fantastic Four. Rumor has it tentative plans are to introduce the FF sometime in 2022.

And you have to believe that Marvel will adapt the Secret Wars saga. It can be constructed similarly to the Infinity Saga...20 movies leading up to an Endgame-like conclusion. And Secret Wars wouldn’t be Secret Wars without the X-Men.

There is one more Fox X-movie yet to be released: The New Mutants. It was finished quite a while ago, and no one seems to know why it hasn’t been released. I’m guessing the reason for the delay is that it’s just not very good.

“Saw it and can definitely see why it will be a loser for MCU”

It’s not a part of the MCU. None of the X-Men movies have been, nor have the Fantastic Four or Deadpool movies.

The next X-Men movie will be the first under the MCU banner.

The number of Adult comic book guys are dwindling as they finally grow-up may be the reason of dwindling ticket sales.

***Why would any adult watch a comic book via film? ***

Years ago, movie critics discussed this. They said, the early movie makers were raised on great literature and made movies of great literature.

Today’s movie makers were raised on comic books.

Marvel lost me as a fan when they killed off Wolverine and Iron Man.

Did you see the attempted reboot of the Fantastic Four? Diversity politics was more important than the story.

I actually liked the two Fantastic Four Movies they made prior to the last reboot. (2005, 2007). The 2015 reboot sucked.

It was my birthday this past weekend and we wanted to see a movie.

It came down to one of three - Dark Phoenix, John Wick 3, or Godzilla.

Checked out the reviews on all of them. That killed Dark Phoenix.

While we liked John Wick 1 and 2, many people were saying that Godzilla was best experienced on a big screen.

We went for the mindless-but-fun Godzilla.
