Elon Musk’s Tesla, SpaceX top list of most attractive employers for engineering students

Employer branding specialist Universum has released its 2019 rankings for the most attractive employers in the United States. Based on the firm’s findings, which were tabulated from a survey of tens of thousands of students from hundreds of universities, it appears that two of Elon Musk’s companies, SpaceX and Tesla, are perceived by engineering students as the best employers in the country.

SpaceX, Elon Musk’s private space company, was dubbed by engineering students as the No. 1 employer they wish to work for, dethroning NASA, which topped last year’s rankings. Among the respondents of Universum’s survey, 20.7% of engineering students listed the disruptive space firm among their Top 5 ideal companies. SpaceX moved up significantly in this year’s rankings too, as the company was ranked No. 3 in the branding firm’s survey in 2018.

Tesla stood proudly at No. 2 in Universum’s rankings, with18.7% of engineering students listing the electric car maker as one of their Top 5 ideal employers. Tesla was also ranked 2nd in the branding firm’s 2018 surveys, which all but highlights the strength of the company’s brand. This is all the more impressive if one were to consider the noise from skeptics surrounding the company, which have largely dominated the news cycle around Tesla for the past months.

This is in contrast to all the negative news and opinions about Musk and his companies.

The ability to attract top talent increases a company's value.

I went right into aerospace manufacturing (satellites) after college. It was a super-cool field to be in. Working at Space-X as a young engineer would be the absolute best.

Why do smart engineers want to go work for companies that WILL go bankrupt in the near future?

They want to be laid off?

Heard it from a friend that young engineers working for aerospace & defense contractors doing vault work are quitting because they can’t bring their phones into the secure areas.

What a difference the Internet makes in young graduates understanding the world opening up before them!

When I graduated as an ME in 1969, your hiring options were pretty much limited to companies recruiting on campus. You set up an interview; did some research on the company in the library; maybe did some practice interviews; and had the interview. These were serious interviews, often by the hiring manager. But your resources to learn about the company and markets were really limited.

If you were good, you got invited to visit a few companies for more interviews and tours. You received offers from one to three companies. It was a tried and true method used for decades. Few of us thought about the “ideal” company to work for because such surveys simply weren’t conducted and nobody pushed that idea at mid-level state schools.

I’m sure it was a lot different at MIT, CalTech, Carnegie Mellon, etc back then.

Today, there’s so much global, always-current information available that searching for an employer is a whole new ball game.

I hope Elon succeeds.

Pork? Yes, he has depended on government largesse.

At least HIS projects have a pay off, have some hope of taking off.

Its not necessarily the company.... its the field. Space exploration and electric vehicles are only going to be growing fields in the years to come. So young engineers want to work in the hottest companies in both of those areas... which are no doubt Tesla and SpaceX.

You guys have an old-timers mentality. People don’t stay at the same company their whole careers anymore. Just doesn’t happen. So you get laid off because the company goes belly up? So what? There will be 10 more companies taking their place if you’re in a hot field.

And having either SpaceX or Tesla on a resume is a massive plus.

You’re blinded by ideology...

SpaceX and Tesla will be a thing long after you and I are gone. Musk will go down in history as a more significant figure than either Alex Bell or Henry Ford.

Must-haves include acknowledgement of Climate Change and a burning desire to save the planet from humanity, work well with others when shifting blame to more capable employees, high regard for socialism, easily adaptable to group-think in and outside of the workplace, general intolerance for conservatism and conservatives, a well-developed and deep sense of community, demonstrated adherence to dictates of political correctness, knowledgeable and sensitive to non-binary gender-related controversy avoidance, a general awareness of technical correctness in best practices and blueprint reading skills.

Ya. A little jaded. Been laid off 3x and it is not fun. Young kid with no family? No problem. Have a family to feed and clothe and put through college? Not good.

A person with no responsibilities nor obligations can tolerate more and might even like it.

But what about the workers that made it happen. There will be no mention of their sacrifices and contributions. No problem. That is the life we lead as an engineer in high tech. Doesn’t mean that it doesn’t get old.

Should clarify that a person can get rich while riding the wild bucking bronco. Some “broncos” are wilder than others and there is a greater potential of return for the riskier companies. There is also a greater risk of loss.

As a person/engineer matures and wants to settle down and start a family, the “wild life” of 80 hour weeks and risks of layoff are less appealing.

It is not unlike professional sports — be smart with your money when it is flowing in in droves and save it for the time when you wish for a slower paced job with less risk. It is difficult to see the forest for the trees when there is ample money. But it will not be forever.

Wealth is supposed to buy you independence. Independence should always be the goal.

As a pretty qualified engineer and contractor, I worked for his two little cousins there at solar city in the very beginning 06. Having been in the solar game since 90.
that was not very engineerin of mind the company it was really more about building up a big show for the public and then just making money that way

I told Them several times that we needed to re-wire facilities because there were fire traps and hazards and they didn’t want to listen to me they only wanted to try to tell people solar panels

That and put panels under redwood trees and drop giant shipments jn customers yard for weeks and other stupid things that could contractors don’t do

I noticed that they lost $125, million a quarter for the last six months or so of their existence before they finally went under a couple years ago

Now his rocket game , Elin that is , ihis rocket game is pretty substantial - space X

A private contractor who competes with NASA - that is impressive

The car thing, the Tesla is obviously very popular , but you can never get me to drive an electric car- sorry

They are very good and fast sports cars though I have to admit

I’ve done classified work, it sucks. I’m happy to be working at a place where you don’t have to worry about getting fired because you accidentally brought your cell phone in or left the wrong piece of paper on your desk unattended. Life is too short for that.

That’s what I’m thinking. Statistically, you’re chances are about 80% that you won’t be there in two years.
