Our 'Greeneyes' has been FOUND, but she is STILL having computer issues, so I have been asked to keep the Weekly Garden Thread rolling until she returns.
That said, I will be posting once a week, and I will TRY to stick to her schedule of a Friday Night/Saturday Morning Weekly Post, but it depends upon what is going on here at MY farm. (It's Spring; it's BUSY!)
The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
The Humboldt Bay region of Northern California is having unusually stunning weather for this time of the year and potatoes, corn and garlic are doing great but I had to replant the cucumbers but not the pumpkins. Headed out to the garden to finish hooking up the drip irrigation plus take a nap...
SF Bay Area.
Just got my green beans in the ground and installed a mickey mouse drip line-soaker hose zip tied to the fence.
Zucchini looking good but probably going to break down and buy cucumber plants.
“SF Bay Area.”
You Brave Soul, LOL! :)
I should’ve napped, today! But, since I didn’t that means I can hit the sheets at 9pm with a book. Yay!
I got some misc. planting done today, watering, random weeding, and lots of dog/puppy chores.
I’m REALLY looking forward to tomorrow when it’s in the mid-70’s. That’s the ONLY thing I miss about my time in southern California - 72 and sunny nearly every day of the year...and NO humidity! :)
Nice. The local wildlife chew apart every edible I plant.
Me and mine can’t wait to get out of here.
We’re surrounded by brainwashed leftists.
Hubs only has two more years until retirement.
Looking at Idaho, Northern Arizona or Nevada.
My daughter is graduating.
She and I like Idaho best.
Nevada is second for us, but Hubs doesn’t like the gambling culture even though I tell him there’s more to Nevada than that-it’s all about those wide open spaces and cheap housing.
He likes Idaho and Northern Arizona.
I’m afraid Arizona will be just like California only hotter.
But northern Arizona, Flagstaff in particular, has an alpine climate.
Oooh that’s going to be gorgeous!
I always plant a few marigolds but I have to grow them from seed or they don’t last.
Phoenix would be way too hot for us!

In the summer, you can count on Flagstaff being 30 degrees cooler than Phoenix. In the winter it will be 50 degrees cooler.
I’ve heard the weather in that area is very nice.
Supposedly the cooler sub-zone of 5, but I know better! Anything perennial that goes in is rated Zone 3/4, to make sure it survives...and 4 doesn’t always.
Got my carrots, beets, and leeks replanted. Also planted 2 varieties of bush beans & a hill of yellow straight neck. No long season stuff at all is going in.
We even had a lot of winter kill on our established elderberries this winter. very little leafing on a disheartening number of dead branches, but lots of new shoots coming from the roots.
I put in our potatoes around the new moon in early May in high 70s weather; then we got unseasonable heavy snows & a hard freeze, as opposed to frost. Well, today, about 6 weeks later, I counted 22 just coming up, out of the 90+ planted. Thought for sure I had lost all of them.
No gardening this week or next ( I have Sun-Mon off) Tomorrow, we’re driving to Denver for the night—about a 7 hour drive. Monday morning we’ll drop a hyperthyroid kitty at the specialists for a radioiodine treatment, and leave her there for the week of legally required isolation.
We’ll then stop at Lowe’s in Cheyenne on the way home, to pick up the new washer we bought tonight. Ours ground it’s way through it’s last load today, when the transmission began slipping. We’ve had it over 15 years.
Next Sunday, I’ll repeat the trek down, and pick her up that Monday, and bring her home. ~95% chance of full cure with the one treatment. Time & labs will tell. At least it doesn’t seem to be malignant, but a benign tumor that sends her hormone levels literally off the chart. Meanwhile, that same Monday, the wife will be getting a checkup of her own in Rapid City.
Lady Bender starts 95% of her annuals from seed but she does buy 5 flats of Impatients for her flower pouches...
Thank you for letting us know about Greeneyes. I’ve been worried.
Here in zone 10, I’ve been snipping succulent babies and tucking them into bare spots. Found a hummingbird nest near my front door. Divided and planted a few Bulbine frutescens, which is sometimes commonly called Jelly Burn Plant as it contain glycoproteins, similar to many aloe species, and is touted for similar healing properties as Aloe vera such as to ease burns, rashes and itches. These properties have also caused it to be called cape balsam (from the Africaans name balsem kopieva) - other common names include snake flower, cat’s tail and and geelkatstert. They are prettier than aloes.
Impatiens looks like it would be hard to grow from seed.
We have a giant yew with the same problem, we have decided just to hack it up and burn it. Replace with younger yew and keep it trimmed. I you have lots of thick old branches inside your boxwood it is probably not salvageable either, unless someone else here has more experience. Maybe the easiest to please your landlord is to yank it and put in a younger boxwood.
