PSL = Pidgin as Second Language
Q
I was a military brat in Hawaii in 1968, 8th grade at Waipahu Intermediate (a tough sugar cane field town then and they did not like white kids). I was one of only a few white kids at the school. My first day of school I thought they were speaking Hawaiian and I was going to learn a second language. But it was Pidgin English and I didn't understand a word.
a grammatically simplified form of a language, used for communication between people not sharing a common language. Pidgins have a limited vocabulary, some elements of which are taken from local languages, and are not native languages, but arise out of language contact between speakers of other languages.
