House Backs Off Holding Barr in Contempt in New Resolution
NY Times ^ | June 6, 2019 | Nicholas Fandos

After weeks of pledging to hold Attorney General William P. Barr and the former White House counsel Donald F. McGahn II in contempt for defying subpoenas, House Democrats appear poised to pursue an alternative path to try to force them into sharing information.

A resolution that the House Rules Committee unveiled on Thursday would authorize the House to petition a federal court to enforce its requests for information and testimony related to the report of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, but without mentioning contempt. The committee is expected to consider the proposal on Monday, followed by a full House vote on Tuesday.

The resolution appears to be something of a tactical reversal by Democrats, who did not immediately explain their decision.

Should they actually try to hold Barr in contempt for not producing a full document whose redactions conceal only grand jury information prohibited for release by law; they are going to look even more goofballish than they already are. Especially if they wrangle over doing so for a month. On an issue that is already over and done with. But I still say, nobody should try to stop them. They should be laughed out of court, and that’s my prediction. I can’t believe they are still considering it.

Russian collusion huh? Oh, I forgot, it’s obstruction now. I’ve never seen such beating of a dead horse in my life.

They must really know their gooses are cooked and are going to pull out all the stops in desperation. These loathsome people need to be brought to justice. I pray they will be.

Pray for Trump and his family, please everyone.

Apparently some part of the concept “co-equal branches” still isn’t clear to them.

Like a grotesque mirror image of Republicans, the Dems want to continue to promise their base action while doing nothing and then ruining for re-election on the promise that if re-elected, they’ll do what they didn’t do for the past term.

Nah. Pelosy knows exactly what she is doing. She does not want the vulnerable members to have to vote for contempt. She wants to give the committee chair the authority to go to court on their own. The way I read it five senior house leadership members, (3 Dems, 2 Reps), would have to agree with the chairman for contempt to be declared by the committee and then authorize the chairman to file a court case. However, I think that the court will say that the full house must vote to hold someone in contempt for there to be standing.

More wasted tax dollars going to the DemonRats favorite law firms and showmanship rather than action on: immigration, trade and reform of the entrenched bureaucracy.

It is always about politics and power with the DemonRats. They don't wish to risk their new purple congressional districts by putting them on record.

Why don’t they just vote to change the law preventing Barr from showing them the material they want to see?

Because they’re not legislators anymore. They’re grandstanding oligarchs.

Now that our side is starting to look very carefully at the claims in the Mueller report, we’re also seeing all the holes in it, particularly in the way they left out exculpatory information, in order to make Trump look as bad as possible. That crap has all the markings of Mueller himself, and his even more corrupt lead prosecutor, Weissman. Then also consider the much less redacted version that Congress can see - and probably the totally unredacted version that the Democrats in Congress have had slipped to them - so they almost certainly know everything in the report.

Put it all together, and maybe what scares the Democrats about the report is that many of the redactions are not to ‘protect sources and methods’, but rather to PROTECT the prosecutors themselves, and keep them from being exposed to criminal prosecution.

Barr, of course, also knows what’s in it, which is why it was so easy for him to call their bluff. So now they’ll put on their little show, get their press mileage, and then quietly walk away.
