OTOH, IIRC, in classical physics, given two moving objects colliding, you add both effective speeds together, and attribute the combined vector to one of the objects, while putting the other to "0".

I'm guessing that the sea creature is taking the combined blame for medical damage, while receiving bupkis veterinary care.
