The mobility needs of people who walk and cycle often the majority of citizens in a city continue to be overlooked, states Share the Road Programme Annual Report 2018. Even though the benefits of investing in pedestrians and cyclists can save lives, help protect the environment and support poverty reduction. Meeting the needs of people who walk and cycle continues to be a critical part of the mobility solution for helping cities de-couple population growth from increased emissions, and to improve air quality and road safety.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), safe infrastructure for walking and cycling is also a pathway for achieving greater health equity. For the poorest urban sector who often cannot afford private vehicles, walking and cycling can provide a form of transport while reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, and even death. Accordingly, improved active transport is not only healthy; it is also equitable and cost-effective.

Im 60 and just recently started riding. Im really really digging it.
I have a nice carbon Specialized bike with Ultegra shifter and I use clips.
Problem Im having is the nerve in my arm and hand start hurting after 20 miles. Dont know if its age or set up or just need more time.
I swim in the mornings and ride in the afternoon. Great exercise.
Wish I had done that my whole life instead of just running.
Personally I go with a sit up straight type of bicycle instead of a lean forward racing type. Which I think puts pressure on your hands.
See the first picture link in post 17.
Also I like step through frame. Which makes hopping on and off real easy.
I dont like speed other than going down hill. So I am good with 8 gears.
Rent a sit up straight type of bicycle for a weekend and see if that is better for you.
I wish I did more bicycling in the past. My daughter got me into it.
I have to go fast. I ride with with my son-in-law who is a tri athlete. They yell keep up or go home old man! Ha.
I think I have tendentious and need a elbow brace.
