Had the pleasure to see Roky perform on several occasions: he was a unique talent and extremely underrated.
I'm sure He is. Psychedelics = mind expanding drugs. Maybe He's telling me to eat more psilocybin mushrooms.......
I do believe he underwent shock treatments for something.
Agree. Disco sucks, has always sucked, and will always suck.
I was a musician and toured the country many times. Never heard of him.
You probably would not have known of him. The 13th Floor Elevators were a local act in South Texas / Austin. I grew up in South Texas in the 1960s and was familiar with them. They were loosely in the genre called “1960s garage band”.
They were a psychedelic band more so than a popular pop act and yielded influence on people from Texas like Janis Joplin and Billy Gibbons. Joplin had considered joining the Elevators band but went to San Francisco instead. The Elevators did LSD at gigs and while recording their records. They were basically an “underground” group.
Thanks for the reply.
After I read your post I looked up psychedelic and garage bands and they were under garage bands :)
Says they were together until 1984.
There was a tribute album for him back in 1990 with some well known artists on it.
I watched “You’re Gonna Miss Me” when they were on American Bandstand.
Another FReeper sent it and it’s the first song I’ve been sent that I liked in a while.
Raw and powerful song.
Thanks for the info.
A MILLION bands under the garage band genre that I have never heard of.
I’m gonna poke around and listen to some songs.
Dang, I have gotten the old lady liking him. I told her we needed to go see him just the other day.
I love everything he has done. One of a kind. Very influential to me and a lot of other Texans.
RIP Roky.
Is writing music about drug experiences satanic? The French composer Hector Berlioz did so in 1830.
Born in Dallas, Texas, Erickson was interested in music from his youth, playing piano from age five and taking up guitar at 10. He attended school in Austin and dropped out of Travis High School in 1965, one month before graduating, rather than cut his hair to conform to the school dress code.[3] His first notable group was the Spades, who scored a regional hit with Erickson’s “We Sell Soul”; the song is included as an unlisted bonus track on Erickson’s 1995 album All That May Do My Rhyme and was adapted as “Don’t Fall Down” by the 13th Floor Elevators for their debut album. The Spades’ original version of “You’re Gonna Miss Me”, later a hit for the 13th Floor Elevators, was featured on the compilation album The Best of Pebbles Volume 1.

The source of the word pharmakos in the Greek can be linked to the following
The Greek lexicons give these defintions:
Liddell, Scott, Jones: links it to magic from drugs and specifically states using poisons.
Friberg: one who prepares and uses drugs for magical purposes or ritual witchcraft
United Bible Society: sorcerer, one who practices magic or witchcraft
Lou-Nida: sorcerer
Thayer: pertaining to magical arts. And points out how it is used for kashaph.
Lust, Eynikel, Hauspie: mixer of magical potions, sorcerer, magician
Gingrech: magician
Only one of the major lexicons mentions “poisoner” as a meaning of the Greek word, several point out the drug use, but all agree that it is magical. There was also the cult of Pharmakos which used drugs on their ritual victims.
