Our 'Greeneyes' has been FOUND, but she is STILL having computer issues, so I have been asked to keep the Weekly Garden Thread rolling until she returns.
That said, I will be posting once a week, and I will TRY to stick to her schedule of a Friday Night/Saturday Morning Weekly Post, but it depends upon what is going on here at MY farm. (It's Spring; it's BUSY!)
The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Thanks!
And it is quite revealing that when temps are above normal for some period of time (which long-range forecast almost always seem to predict) then we hear about it, but when below normal then there is silence. Or that also is blamed on AGW.
Inconceivable.
On the other hand. The lovely lady's flower gardens (here in Michigan) are looking epic.
Our temps are all over the board, but Beau and I DID note that we were still wearing socks to bed in late May!
Huge hatch of Gnats due to all the WET - and no wind. Going to be a fun day in the garden.
Not! ;)
Yikes, gnats!
You need one of those beekeeper getups.
Yowser that’s a big list.
By 05/19/19 most all were planted in the garden, including some toms from Home Depot, which are the larger plants seen in the images below, and which are in the front since that faces South.
The soil has some bagged manure, lime and fertilizer and a little compost added to it, but it has a lot of rocks, and some clay. Trying to improve the soils a little every year, and I am seeing more worms, thanks be to God.
Bought this cheap $6.99 basic soil tester iPower LGTESTSOIL 3 in 1 Soil Meter, pH which shows a PH mostly btwn 5-7
Been saving water from the roof in barrels covered with mosquito netting.
Thank God for the space to plant (very few apt. buildings in this densely populated city have the South and West facing yardage that gets much of any sun) which the landlord has let us plant on, and for the thousands of tomatoes and dozens of squash we have gotten out of this city plot over the past 5 years.
Thus was the plot on 5-7:
And as of right now:
However, I cannot plant on the neighbors backyard this year since the wall is slowly falling over
I’m working on cleaning it up. I see people in there that I know are no longer Freepers. ;)
You grow an impressive amount of stuff in a small space!
I am impressed too. It reminds me of my Dads garden in Chicago. It was a little bit bigger and he really got a lot out of it. Used junk fish he had caught and horse droppings from a riders path in Indiana for fertilizer. He would drive over the state line and fill up his trunk. He also did smart things like plant cucumbers in with his sweet corn so the cornstalks held up the cucumber vines. Hope you post some more as the summer goes on.
Well now I have a problem pulling up the HTML code for posting photos????????????
Well, we pray it will grow at least as good as last year, though off top a slower start. However, do not ask me how the picker (a 6' brother in Christ on the first floor who works in a office job and has picked the toms as a way of relaxation) is going to get in there!
Due to the front getting far more sun than the side, then I put the larger tomato plants quite close together. I hope to make wooden rails for a walk way and cage. Pray and pick!
Somehow he did it last year (9-30)
The "narrow way" if not that of the spiritual one.
I have a mini green house that works good. when I’m finished for the year it folds up and fits in a bag.
Still trying to get my tilling done. I bought a sprayer and am going to try that vinegar weedkiller recipe that’s been making the rounds. If it works, it will cut the number of tilling passes I need to do.
My mostly-finished chicken coop has been moved out to the farm. I need to attach the doors and close up some of the gaps, then build the runs for it. After that, if I can get my shed mostly built, me and the chickens will be able to move out there for the summer.
The next few days are supposed to be sunny. Hopefully I can get a lot of work done before the next rain.
With a deep bed we plant closer together too. I did al stakes for the tomato plants as using cages just makes for less walking room here. The trick is to be timely about tying the plants as they grow.
Awesome news about you and The Girls and Summer Camp, LOL!
They’re predicting rain starting at 4pm, and some rough weather, so keep ALL of your eyes on the skies later today! :)
Obviously NOT, LOL!
