Some people fail to understand the distinction between a tournament of multiple teams competing against each other, and a tournament of multiple individuals competing against ‘The House’.
The kids in a spelling bee aren’t competing against each other, they’re each individually trying to beat “The House’. This year, eight of them managed to do it. Next year, “The House” will (should, anyway) find a way to make itself more difficult to beat.
