When I stayed at Old Faithful Inn there was a cow bison that stayed by the hotel every day near the rear entrance but never bothered anybody. I've been in numerous bison traffic jams without incident. They just walk by the vehicle ignoring us. It is most disheartening to see tourists leave the safety of their vehicles to go out to take selfies with the bison oblivious to the danger despite the pamphlets given to EVERYBODY when they enter the park.
My closest call was with a moose on a waterfall hike. It was in the deep brush but I made a wide detour to avoid it. They are not to be trifled with when alone on a deserted trail with no protection.

I was in northern NH very close the border fishing in the early morning all by myself. I am standing at the edge of this pond. My pickup truck is parked about 100 feet behind me on this logging road. I hear them coming before I see them. A yearling moose and its mom coming right down this stream/ditch directly behind me between me and my truck. I just froze. I was thinking, if I move, I am running into the pond. They continued to walk right behind me about 40 feet and down the road they went. I never moved. Boy was my heart pounding.
