SACRAMENTO (CBS13) A recent burst of seismic activity along the West Coast has scientists taking notice. They believe these small tremors could potentially be a precursor to something larger.
Over the last few weeks, these small tremors have been reported along the coast of northern California, up to Washington. Scientists said its due to the phenomenon called slow-slip, and its happening north of us out in the Pacific.
The Juan de Fuca plate, is what its called, is sliding under North America, and sometimes its locked, and sometimes it slips. But when it slips, its building up stress elsewhere on the fault, said UC Davis Professor Jim McClain, who teaches Geophysics.
When that kind of stress builds up and is released, it can lead to so-called megaquakes, like the one that rocked Japan and caused a massive tsunami in 2011. McClain, says slow-slip is somewhat new and not completely understood, but could be a precursor to larger seismic activity.
These things occur where you have a locked plate at relatively shallow depths, where one plate is sliding under another and then you get a release and its shallow enough that it will actually shift the sea floor, said McClain.
Megaquakes of magnitude nine or more are rare. Its the smaller ones on land that tend to concern most people. Professor McClain says at some point, its likely there will be significant seismic activity along the Bay Areas Hayward fault.
That has the potential of shaking us pretty well here in the central valley, much more than the Loma Prieta earthquake, said McClain.
A building on the UC Davis campus is currently being upgraded to better withstand the next big quake that affects the central valley. Even though earthquakes are a fact of life in California, some say they are ill-prepared for the next big one.
I know that theres always the potential of there being an earthquake, but we just havent thought much about it, said Chuck Mohr.
Experts say the best way to be prepared is to have an emergency plan, and kit, which includes lots of water and non-perishable food.
Good riddance to California.
Experts warn that an offshore quake powerful enough to kill thousands and discharge a tsunami could hit the West coast anytime:

“..and stop pissing off God.”
That might be a help. I don’t think he likes baby sacrifices, or 1001 genders, or “marriage” is anything except between a man and a woman, etc.
Bienvenido a los Estados Unidos...cabrones!
Hysterical news article tying this to Global Warming in 5 . . .4 . . . 3 . . . 2 . . . .
lol..so since man is his own God, lets hear the plan for lubing and lifting a tectonic plate for smoothe earth operation..yes i can see it
The Cascadia fault has slipped in the past and the resulting tsunami was recorded in Japan. Should that happen now you can kiss Portland, Seattle and a lot of the liberal west coast goodbye.

There’s a lot of poop in San Francisco, but the Pacific is big enough to handle it.
And what a cleansing it would be for the body politic.
TRUMPS FAULT!
The Juan de Fuca plate, is what its called,”
I think more than Juan would be affected.
I have the full collection of Juan de Fuca plate, got 'em from the Franklin Mint. Thanks LibWhacker.

Thanks BenLurkin!

Oh, yes. The Cascadia subduction zone. Just waiting for that ‘full nine rip that the geologists keep talking about.
Plant a Project Plowshare device within the deep fault of Cumbre Vieja—rearrange the coast line bordering all of the Atlantic Ocean.
Aha, howdy, a fellow alum!
I was sitting in a math seminar in Kerr Hall when the Loma Prieta earthquake struck. It shook gently for over a minute and wasn’t looking like it was going to stop. Even the guest speaker had stopped speaking and we were all just looking at each other, not knowing what to do. C’mon, you’d think some of those big name fancy math professors would know what the heck to do! Anyway, finally, I’d had enough and said out loud for all to hear, “That’s it. I’m outta here!” I got up to walk out and when I reached the door, looked over my shoulder and the WHOLE ROOM was emptying out behind me, lol! A lowly grad student was leading a bunch of big name, fancy pants math professors out the door, hahahaha.
Anyway we went outside and walked another couple hundred feet away to put some distance between us and Kerr Hall, and the ground was STILL shaking. The epicenter was over a hundred miles away, and it shook for minutes in Davis, perhaps four or even five minutes total. I knew it had to be a pretty big one and was worried about everyone I knew down in San Francisco.
Pretty heavy stuff here.
Requires some Pink Floyd to take in the full perspective...
