Why President Trump Doesn't Have to Bow to the Queen [tr]

President Donald Trump and his family are heading to the U.K. next week for his first state visit after multiple delays, again putting a spotlight on the matter of royal protocol — what is and is not acceptable when he meets Queen Elizabeth.

Last summer, during a working visit to the U.K., Trump made headlines when he shook hands with the 92-year-old monarch instead of bowing. While the move was criticized by some online, it was not against the rules (such as they are).

I don’t think the narcissist has any sort of fealty to anyone or anything. The bowing is just a way of showing the superiority of his exquisite cultural awareness.

Could be that. I always thought it was his way of rubbing the sole of his shoe on America.

He even bowed to children!

(Joke: He was just letting the kid rub his head)

I lived and worked in London for a year. I like the Brits as well as I like any foreigners. I also like fitting in.

But I don’t stand for God Save the Queen, and I would not bow if the opportunity ever arose.

Small gestures to honor the men of Valley Forge, I suppose.

There are Britons who to this day refer to Queen Elizabeth as “that German woman”.

However, the Queen is beloved by the vast majority in U.K. and is an admirable person in her own right, IMO.

Of course, youtube is chock full of lurid `exposes’ of the `seemier side’ of the Royal Family, going back to George III. Harlequin romance meets National Enquirer sort of thing.

I wouldn’t have a problem with standing for ‘God Save The Queen’, as I’d expect them to stand for our national anthem. That’s just respect, not loyalty or admission of being subject.

I don’t stand for God Save the Queen,

During NFL football games played in London, Brits stood for the US national anthem as well as God Save the Queen. As a matter of courtesy, I’d stand for GSTQ in England and expect a Brit in the US to stand for TSSB.

While I ordinarily agree about not bowing, I think I would make an exception in the case of the Queen of England. A bow would not be subservience, but simply giving this woman the respect which is her due. Again, she is the one and only exception to the rule.

Subjects bow.
We conquered them once. We saved them later. You shake the nice granny's hand politely that is all. NO American should bow to any royalty. We are the subjects of no one.
If they expect otherwise-especially from Trump-they have a long wait. He isn't Hussein bowing to Arab potentates.

Bowing to Royalty

When I was 13 to 15 we lived in South America for a couple of years, staying at a large old hotel that had both nightly guests, and residents like us.

Turns out there was a very cute British girl, about 14, also living there. Soft red, curly hair and bright green eyes. Since we were the only English-speaking kids our age around, we naturally ended up hanging out together.

She told me her name was Sam (Samantha) and that her father worked for the British government. After we had been together for a month or so, one day she showed up to where we usually met on the large landscaped grounds, all dressed up for a party, filly dress, hair pileup on her head, the works. A big change from the shorts and T-shirts she usually wore.

She told me her mother wanted to meet me at afternoon tea, at 4 pm. Told me in no uncertain terms that I was to dress nice, wear long pants and a nice shirt, and comb my hair.

And “DON’T BE LATE!”

As she left, I ask what suite she was in, and she said, “6th floor”. And when I ask what room, she smiled slightly, and said, “You’ll figure it out.” And I did. When I got off the elevator, there was no hallway, just a vestibule and a set of ornate double doors with a pull rope for a doorbell.

A few seconds after I rang the bell, there stood a butler in full regalia, but young and very fit looking, and about 6’6” tall. Looking down at me, he said, “Ah, Master XXXX, right on time, thank you.”

Then after he closed the door behind me, he said, “Please follow me. The DUCHESS and LADY Samantha are waiting for you in the library.”

Wait, What?

When I followed Andrews into the library, I found Sam standing behind her mother who was sitting at a writing desk. And I could tell from the look on her face that she was terrified that I was going to screw this up. And knowing me, she had good reason to worry.

After Andrews introduce me, I said, “I’ve never met a Duchess before. Am I supposed to bow, or curtsy?”

And Sam blanched.

Her mother looked at me very seriously, and said, “In this informal situation, neither is required. Then with a big smile, she said, “But I would like to see your curtsy sometime.”

With that, the ice was broken, and Sam started breathing again.

After that, I was regularly invited for tea. The only time the Duchess ever got mad at me was when I made the mistake of referring to Sam as ‘Sam’ instead of Samantha in front of her.

Her eyes flashed and her voice got cold as she said, “Sa Man Tha”

Turns out that Sam’s stepfather was Consul General, and Sam would inherit her mother’s title someday, a title that had been in the family since the mid-1600s.

If that’s not bad enough, it turned out that both Samantha and her mother were actually royalty, and in line for the throne, though in the double-digits position.

And I never did learn to curtsy.

For the same reason our flag is not dipped for anyone...

Our forefathers fought a revolution to do away with all that “royalty” and “nobility” nonsense...Never look back...Americans are subject to no ruler...Respect, yes; bowing, never...

FUBO was/is an obsequious putz of a POTUS...

"Among other controversies in his relationship with Britain, Trump sparked intense backlash in June 2017 after he attacked London’s mayor in the wake of a terror attack there."

OK, it's People, but even in a gossip rag, this is what passes for journalism? Equating a tweet critical of London's mayor as an "attack" in the same sentence mentioning a terrorist attack in which many died horrible deaths while walking around bothering no one in the middle of London? Seriously?

I think an oblique head bow is one thing, but closed-eye perpendicular head bow is too much, and a waist bow is out of the question for an American. Trump often inclines his head obliquely with a nod and smile when meeting people, as a show of welcome.

Here he is with Trudette:

And here he is with Hitlerette:

With a U.S. veteran, Lou Dorfman:

But this one didn't get a head bow:

Nope. Not this time, either:

I saw a fairly recent video of the Queen reviewing some troops, and they dipped their flag for her until it half rested on the ground. As an American,I found that appalling, even though it was a regimental flag and not the UK flag.
