Ha. My first reaction, too:

They were giving wedgies in the 30’s and taking pictures of the results??

I figured “WeeGee”” just got past the spell checker

Like the look on the cop’s face, the tilted head, ‘what the heck’ sort of expression.

My grandfather was a crime scene tech before he retired from Chicago PD. I would have loved to see the photos he had to take. I still have his camera.

Wow, what a memory you have! I forgot about weegee.

His (assuming weegee was a male) last post was in January of 2009, more than ten years ago. January 18th, to be exact, just before Obama’s first inauguration. Very bad time.

Weegee didn’t exactly archive his pictures for most of his career...once the city papers bought what they wanted and they were no longer hot news, he just threw the prints and negatives into a barrel in his darkroom. It wasn’t until he met Wilma Wilcox, towards the end of his life, that his photos began to be organized.

I’m glad to see they had the signs in English and Italian. ;-)

About a million years ago I was a forensic photographer. Let’s just say it’s not a job for everybody.

He adapted his name from the Ouija board because of the way he managed to show up at crime scenes before anyone else. They thought he had supernatural powers but it was actually a group of dispatchers that were on his payroll.
He also had a knack for catching the dark side of human nature, like the girl who couldn’t resist smiling for the camera as the rest of the crowd looked on in horror at a drowning victim. A web search for Weegee drowning will bring the image right up. Too hard for me to post with my tablet.

I’ve left packages unopened—until I need then. Sometimes it’s a few months. It drives my wife nuts. But to leave it untouched for 50 years? My wife would have tossed that a long time ago, “Crappy old black and white pictures!”

That’s a nice profit he has in his box!

He was the “best night crawler.”

His stuff is so classic “noir” a box full of them is a nice bundle of cash.

Wouldn’t that be more of an Emily Latella bit, not Rosanne Rosanadana?

Who was the guy who got it in the barber chair?

That was Albert Anastasia.

He was whacked by Carlo Gambino, who died of old age:

Reminds me of an X-Files episode with Geoffrey Lewis titled "Tithonus".

A guy who can't die is trying to photograph Death at the moment he takes his victim, so he can die as well. Lewis does one Helluva job.

Part of the inspiration for this was the work WeeGee did and in fact Lewis' name was "Arthur Felig".
