‘It Was Like a Zoo:’ Death on an Unruly, Overcrowded Everest
NY Times ^ | May 26, 2019 | Kai Schultz, Jeffrey Gettleman, Mujib Mashal and Bhadra Sharma

Ed Dohring, a doctor from Arizona, had dreamed his whole life of reaching the top of Mount Everest. But when he summited a few days ago, he was shocked by what he saw.

Climbers were pushing and shoving to take selfies. The flat part of the summit, which he estimated at about the size of two Ping-Pong tables, was packed with 15 or 20 people. To get up there, he had to wait hours in a line, chest to chest, one puffy jacket after the next, on an icy, rocky ridge with a several-thousand foot drop. He even had to step around the body of a woman who had just died.

It’s an individual experience for each person and each will get a different perspective to take back home. Some even go multiple times as no two climbs up such a mountain are the same.

Getting pushed around for selfies on cliffs are not my bag but I couldn’t care less as long as they waive getting rescued.

I would go up but turn back at the selfie line. Selfie creatures scare me more than the mountain itself

Why don’t they just built a ski-lift to the top and be done with it.

there is no zone of death in Orlando

You've obviously never been there in August.

“Bike riders.”

It would be really hard to get to the top of Everest on a bike.

It’s still very very few that attempt to summit such a mountain.

Even with modern technology, the chance of death is still 1-3% depending on weather.

We are talking climbing up to an elevation where airliners fly and you can’t even get a chopper. Blows me away

….thus proving that climbing Mt. Everest with all the modern equipment and conveniences is not such a big deal. But hey, it keeps the locals employed.

Life is all about choices good and bad. Some folks have a problem knowing which is which.

“Why don’t they just built a ski-lift to the top and be done with it.”

And, as Political Junkie Too suggested yesterday, a zip-line to get down. Thousands of visitors (couldn’t call them “climbers”) could be processed every day.

“It would be really hard to get to the top of Everest on a bike.”

BUT...if they could, they’ed be riding 3 abreast and blocking a lane. :-)

(Note: Former “respectful” bike-rider that gave it up after getting whacked in the back with a half full drink bottle, thrown from a passing car.)

“Nowadays climbing Mt. Everest is no different from getting a tattoo. “Look at me! Look at me! Check out my Instagram feed!” It gives one the sense of being unique, so much so that everyone’s doing it.”

Everyone? No they are not. Only a select few even attempt it.

??I bought “fast passes” for Disneyland Paris, for my family in July.<<

Everest “Fast Pass” — $25K. Easier upsell money for Nepal.

If they decide to do it I want a piece as I just thought it up!

Probably 4 abreast and running over the dead bodies of fallen climbers on the side of the trail!

Ask Beck Weathers or Jon Krakauer if they would ever do it again.

Exactly. In this world of participation trophies Everest is an extreme activity of individual achievement.
