VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man won more than $1.6 million after playing a penny slot at Valley View Casino & Hotel.

The man, identified as Robert S, was playing the IGT Wheel of Fortune Ultra Wheels penny slot when he hit it big, according to the casino.

“I’m still in shock. I couldn’t sleep for two days. I was up tossing and turning and thought they would call me and say the machine malfunctioned,” Robert said.

A photo taken after the big win shows Robert standing next to the machine.

Robert says he plans to invest the money for the future and is excited for his early retirement.

The win comes just weeks before the casino plans to open its $50 million expansion.

In pennies, $1.6 million weighs more than 3 tons.

If I won big like that, no way would I give my first name and last initial. Too easy to track you down for some friendly begging. If I told anyone other than my Banker or Financial Planner (or the IRS), I would only tell them I won a much smaller sum.

That would allow me to share the joy with someone else just a little bit. If I won One Million, I would admit to having won ‘About $1200.00 after fees, ain’t I lucky?”

Surprised the casino did not claim the machine had a software error. As they frequently do.

Actually they will get as much publicity out of this as they can to draw in the suckers. As my mom used to say, "pennies make dollars"

If he's like most big gambling winners (lotteries, casinos, etc) he'll be in bankruptcy court within 18 months.

“In pennies, $1.6 million weighs more than 3 tons.”

In pennies, $1.6 million is worth more than #1.6 million.

You have to figure that some of the pennies will be earlier than 1982, and those are worth 1.8 cents.

Robert get a tax expert promptly. When you get the funds, move to a secure location and use security. If married, get some marital counseling.

You will soon be deluged with requests, schemes, con artists etc now that this has been in the news.

Prayers go with you for Wisdom.

"If he's like most big gambling winners (lotteries, casinos, etc) he'll be in bankruptcy court within 18 months. "

Exactly. The people who sell annuities may often follow the rule that 25 years is the same as forever. That is, if you plan a retirement income that must last for more than 25 years, you must never spend a penny of the principal. You can only spend the interest. In addition, you must reinvest a good chunk of that interest in order to keep up with inflation. This means that you can spend NO MORE THAN 3% OF THE PRINCIPAL EACH YEAR.

That comes to $48,000 per year. Anything more than that will mean that the money will be gone before you are. Now, $48,000 is a decent income, but it certainly means that you can hardly spend like a "millionaire". And, of course, any big buck spending up front, reduces the $48,000 even more.

Agree, he’ll likely be very busy putting them into rolls to take to the bank.

Well, at least it’s a retirement job for him.

"putting them into rolls to take to the bank"

There was a Kalifornee judge years ago that declared that pennies were not legal tinder.

‘There was a Kalifornee judge years ago that declared that pennies were not legal tinder.’

Not good then - that means the winning was a fraud. He should sue if a dump truck shows up in his driveway.

A lot of times on the rez they’ll simply claim it was a mistake & you get zilch, and that’s that.

Since a rez legally resembles a foreign country, suing them is like suing the King of Holland, or something.

It’s done with total impunity.
