United Airlines Flight 232 was a regularly scheduled United Airlines flight from Denver to Chicago. UA 232 loses all hydraulic pressure after engine explodes during the flight, making control of the aircraft virtually impossible.
The single most unbelievable piece of transport flying in history. Captain Sully did a great job putting his plane down in the Hudson, but it pales in comparison to Sioux City landing(or controlled crash). Pilots of exceptional skill.
111 killed in crash.
Dang, that was a good one..!
My fave is maybe the Gimli Glider.
Never forget watching it live with my stepdad. It was truly amazing.
Yes but somewhere north of 140 saved.
As a Passenger ?
There happened to be a UAL Instructor Pilot onboard. He sat between the Pilot and Copilot manipulating the Throttles on the 2 remaining engines to steer as best as possible. It was a plan He thought up while being there.
Yup. Interesting to say the least. Some of the mounting bolts had fatigued and had some other issues as well according to the NTSB assessment.
Yep, three pilots, amazing the could even reach the airport threshold.
I live in Omaha, ust south of Sioux City and I remember the first responders who saw the passengers and thinking other people had gotten to the crash first because they couldn’t believe there were any survivors.
fun fact...Michael Matz, trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, was on this flight...
It’s not a “actual video”, but a computer simulation with occasional actual audio.
And, it doesn’t recreate the crash, but goes dark, then has text describing the end result, along with follow-up.
I wouldn’t call that a “fun” fact
Turbine fan blade had cracks from manufacture that didnt get found at inspection. Exploded, cut all 3 hydraulic systems. Fan disc parts found later by Farmer plowing His fields.
They found the flap about 10 miles from the airport.
I worked the maintenance control guy who talked to them in flight.
I worked that crash, Captain Haines was a phenominal man as well as denny that was on the floor working the controls. I was responsible for Cpt Haines retirement flight from Dulles to Denver, we had many of the survivors on his retirement flight.
