Disease, droughts, deluges, infestations, parasites, etc... etcc. etcc....
Bad luck didn’t used to mean you got stuck on the phone with your insurance agent.
Hell, no one ever got on TV and called them polar vortexes or bomb cyclones, but even a really extreme stint of weather would thin out the human herd some.
Mostly misfortune was a big factor, but not having your wits and brains was life or death, daily.
