There was some serious competition for eyeballs last weekend when the NBA opened its playoffs with eight games over two days. Most importantly, Tiger Woods was on the leaderboard (and eventually won) The Masters, and that was the big draw for sports fans all weekend. Then by Sunday night, Game of Thrones was all anyone wanted to talk about.
Still, NBA television ratings were down for the first weekend of action, in some cases by more than 40 percent.

NBA Commish: League Ratings Fell After LeBron James Moved West
Haven't watched NBA for more than 20 years, so maybe the Commish is right. But my take is this -
Once their 'star players' started supporting Kaepernick and trashing US (and one of the rabid coaches), is it any wonder the league suffer popularity drop?
Nobody outside of Golden State fans want to watch Golden State win another title.
Yep. Tired of millionaire thugs who hate America.
Very true. The same may happen in baseball, if the Yankees make the World Series this year. Ditto if the New England Patriots make another Super Bowl.
I’m just a casual sports fan myself. But, must say, I get more interested if new teams are in the playoffs or going for the championship. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Now there’s a good chance one of the teams in the Finals will be Canadian.
We were Phoenix Suns fans up until 2007. The way the refs threw the playoff series to San Antonio poisoned the game for us.
The cumulative effect of the super team, where the biggest stars collude to where they'll play has yet to be determined. It's getting to the point where over 80% of NBA teams have no shot of competing for a title. What fan is going to shell out premium bucks for that?
NFL's parity resulting from a hard salary cap is what makes it the #1 sport in the country.
Kudos to Dirk, the last great player to win a championship with no other All Stars on his team.
.... and most of those (Warriors) fans just started watching basketball 5 years ago :o)
LOL, true. And probably starting next year will go back to ignoring them. Just like all those Miami Heat "fans" after LeBron left.
Just like the typical bandwagon fans of Duke.
That is probably a lot of it. I didn't bother to watch the Rockets lose to them again, either.
Seriously, who watches the NBA? What a waste of time!
I don’t give a damn about those NBA thugs and their stupid wives and coaches.
They are all dumb as hell, yet they have to nerve to call us(Trump supporters) ignorant.
Fewer people are watching as the playoffs go on because we have two small market teams in the East (I’m originally from Wisconsin and don’t know a single Bucks fan) and no one outside of Northern California cares to watch Golden State sleepwalk to another title. Basketball is broken, there is too little parity.
What’s going on with that Laball gang of creepy people? Asking for a demented friend.
As a former college basketball player, and television lurker, I find the Bay Area Bozos to be particularly adept at both shooting and moving the ball. Their game is a thing of beauty when it is working. The problem is the season is much too long. At some games the energy level is laughable. The playoffs are something else, and commentators (who I usually turn off) speak lovingly of headhunting, hard-fouls, and nasty moving screens. In the playoffs the true inner thug emerges, and thus one can witness the true essence of today’s game.
Great. May the racist NBA die a slow and painful death.
I’ve never watched a game so why start now. They hate me and everything I believe in.
I still haven’t forgiven Charles Barkley when he put down the US back in the 80s.
