"No one is singled out, but we're all fighting together, and kind of against each other, for that top spot; but we're all equal," senior Ally Batterton Um, what? Cognitive dissonance alert! Take these pills, dear, you'll feel much better.

Yeah, trying to do better can lead to stress (to say nothing of increasing production, one of the hallmarks of the U.S.).
One wonders if the parents had a voice in the school's decision or whether it was a simple political move by a handful of school admins. Also wonder if this applies to school athletics.
At the peak of the anti-Vietnam movement, California increased it efforts to remove competition from its entire curriculum, K-12, and it appears to have worked very well for the political agenda.

The ranking of how well you did (e.g. GPA, advanced placement, etc.) should be enough. The competition aspect is inherent in that. All the rest of it is just an exercise in narcissism. The emphasis in high school should be learning, figuring out where your passions are, and figuring out what you’re best at.

I trust they will be handing out Participation Trophies with their diplomas.

The surface waters are roiling. The deep waters are still. The liberal press is stirring up a fit over the notion that people can demonstrate excellence. The rest of are thankful for that.

Our daughter’s class had an Indian girl competing for it and she was a suckup cheater, but she lost to a young white man, but don’t fear or fret for the sainted diversity she went to a higher ranked school on just skin color alone.

I would not doubt for Progs doing Prog jobs in their matrix that they do list it.

Good grief. I graduated from high school in 1949. There were three of us who were at the top of the class, with GPAs differing only in the second decimal place. I no longer remember, or even care, which of us was at the top. It no longer matters. What we've done since then is what matters. It may be hard for high school seniors to grasp, by after seventy years, your high school rank dwindles into insignificance.

Competition is healthy, but grade inflation is ridiculous. It should be the top 20 ACT scores with the top 20 GPAs. Gpa x 10 + ACT = ?
