Switzerland is one of the most gun-friendly nations in Europe. It has one of the highest rates of gun ownership per capita on the continent, and those numbers are probably skewed low because many households contain guns technically owned by the military as veterans keep their service weapons at home for rapid call-up purposes. (I havent been able to find a definitive answer as to whether those weapons are counted or not.)
Switzerland also isnt part of the European Union. However, the country does enjoy a good relationship with the EU. That relationship is threatened right now because the EU wants Switzerland to put tougher gun laws in place or else find its easy access to the rest of Europe cut off.
Now, the nation is set to vote on whether it should adopt new gun control measures, and opponents of the move are invoking a folk hero known for shooting tyrants. In the eyes of rifle lover Andre Maury, centuries of tradition are under threat.
The 63-year-old is president of Genevas historic shooting club, housed in a gray stone building at the center of town. Sporting a blue sweatshirt emblazoned with the founding year 1474 he says shooting is a sport that requires autonomy and a willingness to stick to the rules. Those qualities are emblematic for Switzerland, whose folk hero William Tell, an expert marksman, launched a rebellion against foreign rule.
So its little surprise that Maury and his compatriots are up in arms about new restrictions, initiated by the European Union, on large-magazine semi-automatic guns. Theyre looking to challenge them via a referendum on Sunday.

The Swiss patriots should not give up and they should not obey. Like the saying goes: When the government says you don’t need a gun,,, you need a gun.
Votes is done. :(
Switzerlands public broadcaster RTS reported 63.7% of voters nationwide agreed on Sunday to toughen its laws on firearms possession in order to bring it in line with the new European Union legislation on the matter, citing final results. According to the same results, voter turnout was 43%.
Can they do a recall vote? Especially after the William Tells of the country visit some payback on r=their EU loving neighbors to tilt the scales in the direction of freedom?
They should have turned out to vote.
They should have turned out to vote for freedom. Now it looks like they would have to regain freedom the hard way.
They should had played the William Tell Overture to get more voters to the polls.

disappointing William Tell has joined Robin Hood in defeat. Looks like it’s the world against Annie Oakley
My favorite version of the William Tell Overture is by Glenn Campbell and accompanying orchestra:

He plays the guitar on the last part with the guitar on his head, but does a great job. He played it as a tribute to the actors playing the Lone Ranger and Tonto.
I’ll bet a lot of Swiss who stayed home the ay of the vote wish they hadn’t.
Never give up your guns, folks, no matter what the voting mob demands. The voting mob is exactly why the US was not made into a democracy but instead, was made into a Constitutional Republic.
Pure democracy is as failed of a form of government as dictatorship.
JoMa
That was great. Glenn Campbell was so good.
The Bill of Rights was setup the way it was, I think, since fundamental rights can’t be trusted to a vote by the mob.
Sooner or later, 51% of the people will vote to steal the other 49% stuff.
To my way of thinking, “Rights” are those things that don’t require someone else to perform. Free speech, self defense, freedom of worship, 4th and 5th Amendment rights, etc.
If I have a “right” to free health care, at some point somebody else is compelled to take care of me. Sorry to get off the beam here, but once people find “rights” for everything it will never end.
