“The plan was for someone to burglarize the home and take several pounds of marijuana, which was known to be in the residence.”

_

One life pro tip I have heard:
Don’t want to be the victim of violent crime? Stay away from drugs.

Yep - and if you can’t do that, don’t deal drugs as it gets you in touch with the scum of the earth (of course, drug dealers with children present are also scum of the earth)...

Yes. Unless you grow your own (and keep very quiet about it) or you live in a state where marijuana is legal, a big down side to pot, is the fact that you are forced into associating with criminals—sometimes very serious criminals.

A former student of mine was involved in a drug crime many years ago. Basically, he and his friends tried to steal some pot from someone they knew had some. By the time they were finished, three people in the home were dead, the teen dealer, his mom and his retarded brother.

One of the bunch got the needle, and the other two (including my former student) got 45 years—15 for each death. I’ve recently heard that the former student is out now—hopefully he’s turned his life around.

Corrected it. It's the illegality of a drug that both drives up its market value and denies its owners the protections of property law, which are incentives to attempted theft. AFAIK this doesn't happen with the legal drug alcohol, nor to licensed pot shops in legalizing states.
