Texas high school students caused some controversy this week after photos of their spirit week event, "thug day," went viral on social media.
Approximately 30 students who attend the Memorial High School in Houston arrived at school on Tuesday wearing oversized jerseys, chains, fake tattoos and cornrows, according to KHOU11. School officials have released a statement, in which they claim the theme was to wear sports jerseys and that the "inappropriate dress and body/hair decorations" were an "alternative, unapproved response." But students claim that the "thug day" theme has been happening for years.
"Memorial High School's 'thug' day for rising senior spirit week... yes this ACTUALLY happened TODAY at an actual high school but y' all keep saying ‘racism isnt a problem anymore’... right alright," Memorial senior Rachel Goodwin tweeted.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Goodwin collected the images from her peers' social media accounts and shared them on Twitter. The senior also shared a photo timestamped from 2015, tweeting, "2015 at memorial high school. Happens year after year I'm telling y' all it needs to stop."

The black “thugs” either should be proud that they are being copied or ashamed when they see how stupid they look...
I'd say the blacks are doing a good enough job of reinforcing those stereotypes on their own.
"How dare you, my good man, culturally appropriate my white culture? Have you no decency?"And my wife? Oh, just don't get her started when she sees a Negress with blonde hair.
Pretty standard attire around here in Los Angeles, why is this racist?? Are Thugs a Particular Race? Can Anyone be a Thug? Personally the Students should dress like that til the end of the school year just to throw it right back at them, tell them you self Identify as a ghetto kid or a Rapper.
LOL! Perfect.
And probably not a bright move by the students.
The Memorial area in Houston is affluent.
As long as there’s a Texas, there’s hope.
Are Thugs a Particular Race?
On a side note, I’ve had students be amazed when they learned that ‘ghetto’ has a much older meaning that has nothing to do with the black part of town.
