To see Google track you in real time, disable Play Services

In an attempt to de-Google my life, I recently disabled Play Services. Now, my Pixel 2 XL complains every time it can't "phone home."

Google wants to contact Play Services (itself a rootkit) every time you receive a call. You'll see the notification/complaint several seconds before the phone rings.

While driving with Maps, Google attempts to track you each time you enter a destination or cancel one as well as at regular intervals during your drive.

Play Services also tries to track me at random times for no reason when I'm not using the phone.

It tries to track you while listening to voicemail and the notification/complaint stops the voicemail playback every few seconds when it can't.

But perhaps the worst offense is that it tracks you as you scroll through your contacts. God help if you look up a phone number because, every few seconds as you scroll through your contact list, Play Services attempts to report it to Google.

I find this behavior reprehensible and I'm sorely looking forward to getting a Puri.sm or /e/ device.

Just for fun, try it for yourself by disabling the Play Services app and see how often Google is spying on you.

Fairly computer literate, but I'm unsure of what 'adb' is.

Android Debug Bridge (adb).

You can set it up any way you like on an android device. All the other icons can be hidden.

On my S4 Active a few years old, the usual ‘pruning’ does not seem to work?

If it is from samsung, disable is grayed out.
Drag and drop in trash bin, negative function!

I just discovered ‘app hiding apps’???
Like swallowing the spider to catch the fly?
But I will give it a look.

I kind of miss my oatmeal box with the string.

This procedure did not work???
Disabling Pre-Installed Apps
Open the Settings app.
Tap Applications . If your Settings menu has headings above it, you’ll first have to tap the “Devices” heading.
Tap Application Manager .
Tap the “All” tab.
Tap the app you want to hide.
Tap Disable . Doing so should hide your app from your Home screen.

I quadrupled my phone’s battery life by disabling Google Play Service permissions.

My Kyocera will not let me disable Google Play services

Go to Settings, Aps, Google Play Services. Then scroll down to permissions. Turn them off. Your battery will thank you.

See post #24. You can’t disable Google Play Services, but you can essentially turn it off by disabling its permissions.

Yeah, that was the ticket, thanks. We'll see what (if any) flakiness erupts from this...

"Fairly computer literate, but I'm unsure of what 'adb' is."

It's a tool used to push files onto and pull files off of your Android phone. Hang out at Xda-developers.com for awhile and you will be able to put a custom version of Android onto your phone - a version which gives you control over what your phone is and isn't able to do. Google hates that place. Apple doesn't care because no matter what you do an Apple phone will always be under their control.

Google knows where I live and where I work and I never ever told them.

Cool. I’ve coded a bit, built a few linux boxes with slackware and fooled around with bash. Personally, I’d like to write an app that removes repulsive emojis from a user’s phone. I’ll have to check Xda-developers out. Thanks for the link.
