The Minneapolis man accused of throwing a 5-year-old boy from a third-floor balcony at Mall of America last month has pleaded guilty to attempted premeditated first-degree murder.
Emmanuel Aranda, 24, entered his plea Tuesday morning in Hennepin County court, admitting he knew throwing a child over a third-floor balcony could kill him.
A family spokesperson has said the boy is now out of critical condition, and is alert and conscious. The family hopes he will be able to return home by June.
KSTP's Brett Hoffland reports Aranda agreed to a plea deal containing a sentence of 228 months (19 years).
As part of the deal, prosecutors agreed not to pursue an aggravated circumstances component to the charge that could have meant an additional year in prison for Aranda.

Bring back public hanging.
At least...
The physical scars and injuries on the child will heal long before the mental scars. God bless that little boy.
“As part of the deal, prosecutors agreed not to pursue an aggravated circumstances component to the charge...”
Lawyer-speak for, ‘THIS WAS NOT A HATE CRIME!’ *SPIT*
Even though it was a little White boy tossed over the railing by a Jihadi?
Some animals ARE more equal than others! And it sure as Shiite ain’t us!
OK. Change that to generic Black on White crime, then. Still, not a ‘hate’ crime, right? ;)
Would be in my court.
As I understand it, the kid was a non-believer, so the response by the Muslim was appropriate.
Whoops, never mind, I was thinking of the UK. This behavior is STILL not acceptable here...for now.
Not a muslim.
Well...the potential murderer would have LOVED to see the kid die.
perp
The American justice system is a farce.
Well, someone beat them to it, then.
Take it to trial and give him the max.
I thought that’s how it worked, but I saw an article the other day that said the perp had pled to a lesser charge as part of a deal. Then it said, “at trial, he...” Strange.
Net result is one less year and taxpayers are spared the cost of a trial.
