Always pack a pistol , and wear it in a belt or shoulder rig , when you go hiking . You never know . Bear ? Cougar ? Insane killer? You have a right to defend yourself . Regardless of what the laws may say about ‘packing’ .

Good advice.
Also, don't shoot yourself in the Buttigieg. Don't keep a round chambered, and if you do, use a holster. If you see a berserker, you will have a few seconds.
In the east you are more at risk from berserkers than bears.
