I seem to recall a theory that similar phenomenon of light bending had an opposite effect on the Titanic, pushing the visibility of the iceberg slightly down below the optical horizon.

Don’t think you can see Bob and Emily’s apartment building from there though.

60 miles involves noticeable earth curvature.

That is about the safe minimum distance one would want to be from murder city. As for seeing it...muh.. .

Fata Morgana...isn’t that a Star Wars character?

Glad to see this phenomenon explained or else the good people of St. Joseph, MI would be worried the hellhole of Chiraq is that close to them!

That’s pretty neat...Similar to me sitting in Colorado Springs and seeing the tops of buildings in downtown Denver...hard to imagine...

This effect, captured on video by Joshua Nowicki, is called fata morgana, which is an optical bending of light by changes in air temperature over bodies of cold water, such as Lake Michigan in the spring. Flat Earthers will use this as proof of their lunacy. When, in fact, it proves the opposite.

There’s a drop of about 2400 feet @ 60 miles.

Fata Morgana...isnt that a Star Wars character?I thought she was the well endowed young lady who was known as "the kissing bandit." She jumped out of the stands at baseball games and kissed the players.

"...earth phenomenon..."
Many decades ago as a young child I sat it my parents car talking on the CB radio to someone nearly 800 miles away due to (apparently) perfect atmospheric conditions.
All of us were howling with laughter since normal range was maybe 2-3 miles.
Too bad our beautiful, interesting, and remarkable planet will be GONE in 12 years. LOL.
