The suspect in the shooting fled the scene and was later located in a nearby apartment. Once police entered the residence, officials say the suspect was confirmed dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
MOORESVILLE, N.C. Mooresville K9 Officer Jordan Harris Sheldon, 32, was shot during a routine traffic stop on West Plaza Drive shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday.

When I saw the headline with “K9 officer,” my first assumption was that it referred to the dog.
I’m a Marine mom, too!
What are the odds of police being murdered vs the general population, which has a murder rate of 5 per 100,000 population?
I have no idea, but it’s a good question.
In the 70s, when I was working in a lower socioeconomic area of Chicago, the male Welfare officers (rumor) were impregnating women so they could get more welfare. Now, that was a rumor, but the welfare Queen in that area had several children and kept having more. Generous welfare has done extensive damage to minority families. Yes, no father around is devastating.
nobama and LIBeralism.
That’s a raw number and is very misleading.
First the population of America has doubled and there are more police per capita today. So an across the board comparison like your chart tells you very little. But even more relevant are things like modern communications, modern emergency medicine, modern EMS capabilities, medical helicopters, bulletproof vests and dozens of other capabilities that help a far higher percentage of injured officers survive.
So what your chart is actually counting is the number of cops who SURVIVE felonious attacks.
A more useful chart would compare the number of cops shot, stabbed, clubbed, badly beaten etc from 1960 to today.
So your chart of cops who survive attacks is actually indicating a far more violent society today because if today’s cops lived in 1960 world, you would see a true death rate of cops.
Why doesn’t Vox, a far-left, Marxist, pro-BLM publication, produce a chart that shows Assaults against police officers while on duty.
A lot of people like to use “deaths” as the measure for “most dangerous job.” That’s patently laughable. “Danger” includes any situation in which potential death is at stake.
In 2016, 57,180 officers were assaulted in the line of duty of those 28.9% sustained injuries in the assault.
In 2016, there were 652,936 full-time law enforcement officers serving in the United States. That means that more than 11% of ALL full-time law enforcement officers were assaulted on duty in just 2016 alone.
There are very few other professions, where you have that kind of risk of an assault in a given year.
Also notice the damage that Bammy the Kenyan Muzzie did to law enforcement in the U.S:

Notice that President Trump has reversed this.
You nailed it. Police today have better equipment. There is better medical care.
This is what you are looking for:
An 11% on duty assault rate in a single year.
“It’s probably impossible to get the numbers that allow us to determine whether “intentional attacks on LEOs as LEOs” are increasing or decreasing. “
It really isn’t impossible. In fact it’s rather easy. And this data goes all the way back to the OK Corral days. Felony level assaults are the highest America has ever seen. If you norm out for the effect of modern communications (most cops in 1960 didn’t carry a radio) medicine, EMS, transportation, modern surgical techniques, antibiotics, and modern protective equipment, this is a very violent time in America.
And this violence surge it is distributed very unevenly. It is centered in around 10 major greater urban centers. Without them, the rest of America is about as violent as Switzerland.
Stick to taxes.
“Officer murders would have to nearly double to indicate a same-rate condition, so with fewer offier murders ( same for general population) we indeed are seeing a significant reduction n murder overall”
No, they wouldn’t. Amateurs count murders. Statisticians and other professionals count the number of attempted murders across such a distance. The final outcome does not tel you this is a less violent society.
Check out my post #70 for some info and helpful links...
You nailed it again. Statistically there is also a particular demographic that is leading the charge in the uptick in violence. However, people get their panties in a bunch if you even dare to suggest its existence.
Don’t leave Obama out of this..
“What has happened to this country?”
Mostly too many illegal aliens and Blacks who think they ought to be cared for for their entire lives. At least in this case the killer offed himself, saving the citizens the costs and the attendant anguish of a trial, followed by years of costly appeals of the death sentence. I just wished that the deceased officer had had the opportunity to inflict the fatal wounds on the perp himself. That would have been at least “a little justice!”
Tragic.
Got numbers? Several reputable organizations studies show overall decreases in violent crime per capita over the last several decades, with blips here and there.
Rest in peace hero. I pray that God will give your family and loved ones the strength and courage to face these terrible days. They are not alone.
K-9 is named Ramon, who stayed by K-9 Officer Jordan Harris Sheldon was at Officer Sheldon's side when He Passed away in the Trauma Center.
The Body Camera is being reviewed for more information as to what took place.
I apologize for the spotty info being posted as I'm having Connection problems.
Thanks! We prayed for Officer Sheldon and his family at church this afternoon. I’m sure Ramon is very saddened, as well, poor fellow.
