The fear of the slavers had a great deal to do with the success of Lincoln. Many free citizen’s feared that the power of the slavers would allow them to make free citizens slaves.
I sometimes use “The Abolitionist Party” to refer to the Republican Party when dealing with left wingers. It drives them nuts.
