The fear of the slavers had a great deal to do with the success of Lincoln. Many free citizen’s feared that the power of the slavers would allow them to make free citizens slaves.
I sometimes use “The Abolitionist Party” to refer to the Republican Party when dealing with left wingers. It drives them nuts.

I am a history buff with an interest in the period 1845 - 1870. Fascinating stuff and very instructive as a backdrop for what is happening now. I could go on for hours...
