Close. The Republican party was formed in 1854 in Ripon, Wisconsin specifically to end slavery. Our first Presidential candidate was John C. Fremont a famous and popular explorer of the West. He lost to James Buchanan which became a disaster when Buchanan failed to address slavery.
Lincoln was our second candidate and he did end slavery.
