Martha Stewart got salmonella poisoning and she raises her own critters.

Dec 7, 2012 - Martha Stewart has reported that she got Salmonella poisoning from Thanksgiving Turkeys this year...

That made me feel fortunate to still be breathing!!!

Went to a sister in laws for T-day, the house is packed around the TV, I spot a RAW bird in the kitchen and ask if she is making extras?

Oh no, she says, it will only take a little over an hour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She is not big on math.

Then she attempted to accelerate the cooking????

Hours past the scheduled dinner time, they bring the bird out and start to carve it.

BLOOD EVERYWHERE!!!!!

I still occasionally have flashbacks.

My last Thanksgiving at the firehouse, one of the guys went to a place where you go out in a field where they have a bunch of turkeys and shoot it yourself... then the place cleans it and wraps it up. So he got this 40 pound turkey and he put it in the freezer. And another guy bought this huge turkey deep fryer and a bunch of oil. So on Thanksgiving the guy with the turkey brought it in, but he hadn't defrosted it.

This was a big station with about ten of us and all of our families. I was the senior officer but I wasn't paying any attention to the turkey preparations because it had all been delegated long before Thanksgiving. So they decided to just put the frozen Turkey in the oil and leave it in a “little longer” than usual. Of course being frozen it splattered spilled oil everywhere. Luckily they had it on a concrete patio or they probably would have burned the station down.

So when they took it out, it was the ugliest charred up mess that anyone had ever seen. But when they started to cut it up it was still frozen solid in the middle, so they hacked off the outside of it and put the frozen carcass back in the hot oil and made an even bigger mess. It was the worst turkey that anyone had ever tasted. Fortunately, no one got sick, but they made a huge mess and I have no idea how many gallons of oil they wasted.

I learned years ago to make our own holiday dinners. There’s less drama and we can enjoy our favorite traditional recipes and the meal is served at noon rather than hours after everyone has died of starvation. The turkey goes into the oven at 7 am and the dinner bell is rung at noon. The dressing is the kind we like. The sides are the ones we like. The pies are the ones we like. No fuss, no muss and we’re happy and relaxed.

If you must make an appearance elsewhere, just stop in for coffee.
