I always put chicken (even though it is already packaged) in another plastic bag before putting in the grocery cart. In case the first wrapping is contaminated or leaky. I leave it in the extra bag or 2, if putting in the fridge before using, and sometimes before putting in the freezer.
Also, at Fareway Foods around here, you can buy whole chickens or pieces from behind the meat counter, not pre-packaged.
My favorite is family-pack thighs. I put them in smaller plastic bags for freezing.
We all have fresh butcher areas. But they dont hand it to you as is, they package it...same as they did for whats off the shelf. Why is chicken special? What about pork (famous for salmonella if not cooked thoroughly), or the other meats?
I can understand taking extra precaution, but dont know why chicken should be singled out. And frankly lettuce has been a bigger threat not being cooked.
