>30GB just to install and maintain an operating system? Before you add Office or 3rd party apps? Seriously?
It's not that we don't have big drives. It's just... embarrassing.

Throw away those old computers and smaller hard drives -- you can bet this trend is only the beginning.
What I don't understand is, if Windows 10 is so tied into and dependent on, The Cloud, how come it keeps getting bigger on the ground??
(*) That's BOHICA to you folks in Rio Linda. :-)
I’m on a Mac with a smalllish SSD, I’m pretty sure I only gave my Windows 10 partition 32 GB in the first place. I most of my PC games on an external disk... I am really not happy about this.
Embiggened
From the people that bring you autocowrecked.
...Whatever.
Yep - and I once downloaded a small OS that fit on a 720K floppy and included connectivity and browsing....
I remember that Win 3.1 for Workgroups was installed via 20 or so 720K floppies.
Clouds drop rain, baby! And when it rains, it POURS! :-D
Does the increased space requirement translate to increased functionality?
Highly unlikely.
Funny this author writes as if Microsoft is doing a bait in switch and in reality his article is a bait and switch. Starts the sentence with Windows 10 then changes to Windows 8 to try and find a problem with the storage size.
Sad the author didn't need to do this. Doubling the storage requirement is big enough to write about without dishonest fake news. Yes fake news is in the tech industry news as well.
this sucks actually. If you dual boot or use VM’S this becomes a problem. I know my partitions are running out of head room which means lousy performance and if it keeps up I am going have to redo things and for what? Microsoft figures it’s no big deal everyone one has at least 500G now. They have never cared much about their users with older systems.
Yes it does. Windows 10 has added a ton of new features. Just look it up and you’ll see. Or install the original windows 10...you’ll see what features you’re missing. Some/many aren’t used by me, but that doesn’t mean others aren’t using it. Like the People hub. I never use it but it was a significant update that people really wanted.
The big improvement for me was when they brought back the onedrive stub files.
“Here’s the legend: at a computer trade show in 1981, Bill Gates supposedly uttered this statement, in defense of the just-introduced IBM PC’s 640KB usable RAM limit: “640K ought to be enough for anybody.””
Yep. This article should have focused on stuff like this as opposed to windows 8 hardware.
And yes Microsoft does like to push technology and getting people to expand. That’s because their 3rd party hardware vendors need them to. If people aren’t buying new stuff then they aren’t putting money into the Microsoft ecosystem.
Just like Phone upgrades every year or two. Android and Apple do the same thing by not supporting their older technology.
MVS-XA used to reside on a single 3380-a unit ,, about 800mb and that was a full fledged mainframe OS... microsofts W10 really needs to be replaced with a sensibly sized efficient OS , Linux is good...
My Slackware OS takes up 8Gb. Faster and more stable than Windows. Not to mention it is free.
Is there a law that Windows must consume all advances due to Moore’s Law?
Sure is. To think Windows 3.11 came on 7 or 8 1.44mb 3.5" floppy disks.
Unbelievable.
DOH!
