ZERO excuse for any parental support past 18 unless the kid has severe disabilities.

I’ll give you two examples. One a colleague of mine, the other a relative.

Colleague: Daughter went against his wishes and at age 18 married a guy entering the US Army. In relatively short order she had 3 kids. The husband got shipped to Iraq. He came back messed-up, with PTSD. Ran off with another woman and they got divorced. Daughter had no marketable job skills so he has been subsidizing her living with the 3 grandkids while she tries to finish school and start a career (thusfar without success).

Relative: His flighty, immature, unmarried daughter went and got herself knocked-up during a one night stand. The father is a druggie and eventually ended up in a prison several states away. She has had 9 jobs in the past 5 years, either because she proves to be incompetent, or cops an attitude with her boss and tells him to go f*** himself. Relative is letting her and her son live with him and subsidizes their living expenses.

When asked why they are doing it both of them reply “because its the only way to save my grandkids”. Doing anything else would leave them at the mercy of their schmuck-brained bad attitude moms.

Buckeye,

I heard the exact same thing a couple of days ago, from a friend of a friend.

2 dysfuntional and broken daughters, 4 grandchildren between them. No sperm donor(s) or baby daddy(s) in sight. Both under 30.

Daughter #1 (1 child): Perpetually unemployed and living the wild life with her "cool friends," moved back home, at the insistence of dad, so mom and dad could take care of their grandson and keep him out of her druggie loser friends environment. Still living at home, still not working, still barely functional as a mother.

Daughter #2 (3 children): Oldest, diagnosed with Graves Disease, which makes her effectively unemployable and in need of caregiving. Now being cared for by her mother. Diagnosis and treatment uncertain, which makes her future prospects of anything uncertain. Third child is with a second loser boyfriend sperm donor.

My heart aches for those poor grandkids. Children don't get to pick their parents.

I know exactly where they are coming from because my wife is there now. She drained her savings and sends about half her net income to support her 30yo daughter, who dropped out of high school and has never had a job, and family.

I’ve heard it said before that if you don’t raise your kids right, you’ll end up raising your grandkids. Or something like that.

I know a couple of older families in that boat. I wonder what will happen once grandpa is no longer able to work.

Sad.

There is another way, you take the grandkids in, and cut YOUR children off at the knees. Use the court system, it is the best thing you can do for both generations.
