I'm s-a-a-a-a-i-l-i-n-g...
Like a bartender?
I am an outside observer, probably like you. I just call it as I see it. Most "mental health professionals" I meet are strange. I know one whose kids are goth drug addicts and she walks her cat around the neighborhood on a leash. Another I know has the worst B.O. you ever smelled. Another I know is on his 4th marriage. I could go on.....
The vast majority of them are nuts, or are social justice revolutionaries - as I said, nuts!
Better known as a "friend."
A good psychologist will help you.
A psychiatrist is mostly a drug pusher, often a State bureaucrat.
Private parties like Step 13 do the most help, but are attacked by the State collectivists looking for RV Recreational easy times by hurting those in need. They are the truly wicked.
Psychopathy is a spectrum.
Almost all surgeons and psychiatrists have a bunch of psychopath in them. Nearly by definition.
Let’s ask Hannibal Lechter
In my anecdotal experience, most people who work in the psych fields indeed have a screw loose.
Some very brilliant people are strange, antisocial, have weird quirks, etc. So maybe doctors have their share of them?
Then again, can they make rational, objective, assessments of a situation or person and offer effective treatment if their perception is compromised by their own experiences or brain wiring?
The curriculum is pretty rigorous. Although there are probably varying degrees of effort depending upon the certification and degree level.
I understand they undergo psycho analysis during their education, I do not know if that would disallow them from getting licensed.
On another note regarding the comments on therapists, can you imagine listening to peoples horrid heartbreaking stories everyday for a lifes career?
My experience with MHP’s is they’re not so much nuts as moonbats...high functioning ones, in fact.
Glad that you got out of the tough time with your son and not in complete financial devastation. You were lucky.
When my ex and I went to “marriage counseling” (this would have been about 1992 ?), one of the main issues was that my ex would spend lavishly to entertain his friends at bars and restaurants, often to the tune of $1,000/month or more. We did not have that kind of money, and I scrimped and scraped to be able to afford shoes for the kids, etc. We both worked full time, and incomes were similar.
The counselor (male, if it matters) told me that I needed to come up with a budget to try to make the finances work, so that this issue could be reduced. I handled the bill-paying, etc. (due to the ex would never have paid a dime more than the minimum or a day before a payment would be late).
So he gave this issue over to me as being solely “my problem”.
We didn’t keep going to counseling much more after that.
Wasn’t the Fort Hood shooter a shrink, as well?
Edgamacated psychos...the mind is a terrible thing.
There are some things you do not feel comfortable telling to a friend. Better to tell a stranger who has no investment in your situation and will give you no advice.
Usually you just want to figure out something by talking.
Only if he were also incapable of holding a real job.
Absolutely. A fair number of psychiatrists became such because they wanted to learn about their own mental illnesses and ended up going for the only job they were trained for.
That probably explains Doctor Jordan Peterson’s depression, but he’s far from the only one. Around half say they do, too.

Why Shrinks Have Problems
Suicide, stress, divorce — psychologists and other mental health professionals may actually be more screwed up than the rest of us.

Not enough, I will tell you that. I made only a few normal friends in shrink school. Most of them were nuts. Lol. But true.
