As Solzhenitsyn (a Russian philosopher) observed, “the line dividing good and evil runs down the middle of every human heart.” There is deep truth here which people do not like to grapple with, and so the news media can’t really engage.
Even people who end up trying to paint nearly everything as grey end up wanting some black hats to pin the worst stuff on.
The instinct is to complete the quotation “the line dividing good and evil runs ...” with something that doesn’t point at us as having a responsibility concerning evil other than to gouge it out of somebody else.
I threw out the incomplete quotation in a first-year university class once, and received no response—so I called on a student that I knew to be sharp and cultured to see what she would say, and without blinking an eye she responded “Between Russian and Ukraine.” (Her grandparents had immigrated—and it was probably around the time of the whole Crimea business).

The only thing that would make something like this funnier would be if Yakov were elected president of Russia.

Which is a good example of how polls are often useless, since it's almost certain that more than 36% of Ukrainians will wind up voting for this Jewish actor in the runoff election. Which is probably unfortunate, not because he's Jewish, but because he's an empty suit and almost certainly someone's puppet.
