ALACHUA, Fla. (AP) — A large, flightless bird native to Australia and New Guinea attacked and killed its owner when the man fell on his property in Florida, authorities said Saturday.

The Alachua County Fire Rescue Department told the Gainesville Sun that a cassowary killed the man Friday on the property near Gainesville, likely using its long claws. The victim, whose name was not released, was apparently breeding the birds, state wildlife officials said.

LOL! As a teenager I worked for a farmer. One day he told me to scoop out the farrow house (where sows are penned before they litter). The farrow house is a low structure that consists of narrow cages on either side of a large central area. In order to clean out the individual pens I had to release the sows, one by one, into the larger area while I scooped out the crap from the pen, and then herd the sow back into the cage. One sow became quite belligerent and came at me with mouth agape (sows may not have tusks but they have huge canines, 3 or 4 inches long). At first I managed to fend her off by putting the scoop shovel blade between her and I but she nosed it aside and kept coming. I resorted to bashing her on the nose with the shovel but that didn’t work either. Finally, I grabbed one of the rafters and hoisted myself up. There I remained until the sow wandered back into her pen, then I jumped down and slammed the gate. Terrifying experience!

SMH. When I read stories like this I think rising sea levels can’t cover Florida soon enough.

Was the bird a #MeToo victim of it’s ‘Breeder’?
Maybe this was payback for a lifetime of abuse.
Stranger things have happened when human beings are alone with their oversized ‘birds’.//

Burt Gummer may be a better choice to deal with the situation.

I saw on up close at the Parrot Jungle in Miami. I believe their bird had killed someone in the past and severly injured another. Once this bird dies, they said that was it, no more.

Very impressive bird up close. You can see how strong they are and the way they will eat a whole mango, seed and everything is impressive.

Why raise them? Zoo attraction? Certainly not a children’s petting zoo.

Maybe if you put enough garlic and BBS Sauce on them, they might be edible? LOL.

“What IS the ground speed velocity of an unladen cassowary?”

The Australian cassowary or the New Zealand cassowary?

I'm a birdwatcher. It is instinctive among birds to attack any animal or bird in their vicinity that staggers, falls or shows signs of physical distress. I have observed this behavior quite a few times. I've seen flock birds attack one of their own in this fashion. The attack is immediate and merciless.
