Yup, same if you get a gun seized for any reason, no mater how legitimate your ownership:
In the overwhelming number of cases, they make it as hard and expensive on you as possible.
It’s basically badged thievery.
Either they lost it or some LEO “fat fingered” it. It’s a common occurrence. (Must have been a nice knife.)

They can forget about getting their property back. Other cops have their motorcycles and guns. And what cash they had was also shared by the police.

The property probably was sold long ago, the cops there won’t admit that.
Would explain their apparent reluctance to return it.
