AUGUSTA, Ga. — Here he comes.

Brace yourself, Augusta.

Brace yourself, golf world.

Tiger Woods, 14 years removed from his last Masters victory, is in prime position entering the weekend to seize his fifth green jacket.

Woods, who last won the Masters in 2005, stormed up the Augusta National manually operated leaderboards with a 4-under 68 in Friday’s second round and stood at 6-under for the tournament. That was one shot out of the lead shared by Jason Day, Francesco Molinari, Brooks Koepka, Adam Scott and Louis Oosthuizen.

Woods in contention at the Masters again. Just the way it always used to be when he was winning in 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2005.

I don't play golf. He is a good athlete- I'll give him that- but I resent the way the media gave him a pass over his numerous affairs. My husband isn't a fan either so it isn't just me.

I love the Masters and have several favorites on the tour but he is not one of them. Don't like Dustin Johnson, either. Cocaine problem.

True. I think most golfers are by nature conservative - it’s a very tough grind to make it to the PGA Tour, and even more of a grind to stay there. Many players climb to the top but can’t stay there. The books are littered with major winners who lost their game - Shaun Michael, Rich Beem, Trevor Immelman, David Duval, Ian Baker Finch, et al. And no matter your swing coach, your shrink, your strength coach, when it comes down to it you are out there on your own and it’s up to you. So it makes them the strong individual type, i.e. conservative.

Would LOVE to see Mickelson pull it off (he would be the oldest player to win it) but unfortunately, it seems like he falls off after fast starts in recent majors. Hope he can stay strong this time.

Supposedly DJ had some .... involvement.... with one or more players wives too in the past, adding to his unpopularity among the pros. He's an extremely talented golfer though, but I don't think he is really cut out for the limelight - he doesn't like it. And then he does something stupid like falling down the stairs on the eve of The Master's (two years ago) and has to withdraw because he hurt his back (that was the story anyway).

He is extremely talented but I have never cared for him.

Maybe today was Phil’s bad round .... you usually have one in a four round tournament. He escaped with a 73 and is still very much in contention. And he certainly knows the course as well as anyone. But... at 48 it’s tough. I’m a casual player. It is so hard to maintain concentration on every shot through eighteen holes. Imagine that over seventy two holes and add that the competition is ratcheted up to five levels above intense. It has to be exhausting. He won at Pebble Beach. Maybe he can do it here too.

Interesting comment. David Duval’s wife is a friend of mine. It has been a very tough road for him. They still don’t really have answers. He just imploded. I do like his commentary on the Golf channel but I also know that’s not where he wants to be.

Myself and 11 others that I worked with used to go to Persimmon Hill GC in S Carolina to play Friday-Sunday the weekend before the Masters...On Monday, we’d drive over to Augusta (about 30 miles) on Monday and Tuesday to watch the practice rounds...(Now you have to get practice tickets ahead of time)

That course is AWESOME!!!!

Great analysis. I hope you are right and he has the concentration to hang in there.

Looks like that one pops in every 6 months, or so, to do drive by attacks. Ignore.

Really? Cool! I was always a big Duval fan - Georgia Tech alum - and I wish he had won more majors. He did get the one British Open, but then ... what happened? I thought part of it was he just wasn't that dedicated to the game after that. There was also vertigo? He did however make it to Number 1 in the world and won a lot of money and he will always have a closing round 59, one of the greatest rounds in competition history.

Agree, his short putting has been awful. He says he’s hitting his lines and isn’t concerned. I think he’s playing it off, and he really has the yips. Plus he’s not taking advantage of the par 5s. All that and with the weather moving makes me think he’ll fade. Nicklaus remains the GOAT — talent and class.

Without a doubt. TGTEW... The Greatest There Ever Was.... and a total class act, and per many sportswriters, the greatest interview they ever get. He also plays the piano.

You can get practice round tickets still, I think...

A lot of the players (especially on Monday, will talk away with the spectators)

John Daly said the tee boxes at Augusta were better than the greens he grew up playing in Arkansas.
