Teen fights off charging grizzly with bear spray after being pinned face-down on the ground [Good Morning America] MORGAN WINSOR Good Morning AmericaApril 11, 2019

Teen fights off charging grizzly with bear spray after being pinned face-down on the ground originally appeared on abcnews.go.com

A teenager who encountered a bear in Montana on Sunday was pinned to the ground by the animal but managed to escape using bear spray, authorities said.

The 17-year-old boy told wildlife officials that he was walking down a hill in a remote area some 30 miles south of Ennis on Sunday afternoon when he heard a noise behind him. The teen said he turned around to find a bear charging at him, according to a statement from the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

The boy was carrying bear repellent in his backpack, but the animal pushed him up against a tree before he was able to react, he told wildlife officials.

The teen said the bear held him up against the tree momentarily before letting go. The boy fell over and tried to crawl between two trees for protection, he told wildlife officials, but the bear "pinned him face-down on the ground."

He managed to reach over his shoulder and grab the bear repellent from his backpack. He sprayed the bear, which then backed away and left the area.

The boy made radio contact with his family, who were staying at a cabin in the area. He was taken to Madison Valley Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

You beat me to it. Or your gun either, for that matter.

I carry both. If he was really forced to the ground before knowing the bear was there, spray might not have been a bad choice to move him off.

Anytime to come face to face with a grizzly is bad, but spring with them coming out of winter is really lousy. They are cranky, hungry , and on the prod.

We found out that bear spray works on Amazon employees, too. Actually, probably better than it works on bears.

Yup, both articles came up under hunting news one after the other. Despite being months apart

With pepper (O/C) at that close of a range you have to be concerned about incapacitating yourself as well. I remember snorting and coughing up a storm after a forced cell extraction back when I worked in a prison. And that was with filter masks.

I carry two Bear Spray cans in my PU. My wife has one in her car. The Bear Spray is in the supplied holster and zip tied to the drivers seat. I’m sure it will be great for crowd control.
She had to show it one day when one of the homeless from south of the border was VERY aggressive asking for money.
He took one look and left her alone.
Bear Spray works great I tried a can out in our back yard.
It was three days before we could go out in the yard!

THIS is why I live where I live!

A. No Grizzly Bears.
B. No poisonous Snakes.
C. No Scorpions.
D. No Cockroaches.
E. I can grow GOBS of Tomatoes and Peppers!

Life. Is. Good. :)

P.S. Ok. Fine. I will admit to the occasional SKUNK spraying the dog, but that’s THEIR problem and not mine, for the most part. A few weeks living outside while the stink wears off and you’re good to go!

P.P.S. Cr@p. I forgot that parts of ‘Sconny is LOUSY with Democrats, LOL! ;)

I find people react differently. In my unit before our 1st deployment, we had to get sprayed because we were going to carry them. The Winnipeg police came to our base and had fun dousing us. Some guys scream and run around, some just briskly walked to the showers. Myself and a few others were able to put mind over matter and function. My vision was impaired, but I could do anything I needed to including severely messing up the person doing it. (I didn’t actually really hurt them, just let them know I could of easily).

A bear to me is no different, there would be varied reactions. I don’t even bother carrying spray myself and I work in grizz, wolf, cougar etc country. I carry a sharp point stick with a mag on it heh.

You will have mountain lions somewhere. I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but they’re there heh.

They’re a state away. In Iowa.

When they find them swimming across The Mighty Mississippi, THEN, I’ll worry. :)

“Since 1995, there have been 21 mountain lions in Iowa confirmed by the DNR.”
