MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A child was rushed to a hospital Friday morning after reportedly being thrown from a balcony at the Mall of America, and one person has been taken into custody.
A witness at the Bloomington mall told WCCO that a woman was screaming that someone threw her child from the third floor balcony. This was near the southeast corner of the mall.
“She was screaming ‘Everyone pray, everyone pray. Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge,'” Brian Johnson said.
Bloomington Police reported that the victim was 5 years old. The police chief said this appears to have been an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public.
The police department is working with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office crime lab to investigate the incident, and they are also working with the mall to determine if any surveillance video exists of the incident.
Emergency crews could be seen performing CPR on the child in the southeast corner of the mall. A large amount of blood was on the floor.

A release said Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda was being held at the Bloomington Police Department on a possible attempted homicide charge.

The MOAs first statement, then updated statement....
“Earlier today, Mall of America security was notified of an incident involving a child falling from one of the upper floors. Mall Security responded immediately as well as the Bloomington Police Department. Emergency Services were notified and responded as well. The child was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital. Bloomington Police is investigating the incident.
Any additional information about the incident will come from Bloomington Police Department.”
They issued a later statement later, saying:
“This was a senseless act and words cannot truly express our profound shock and sadness. Our immediate and only concern is for the wellbeing of the family and the child, as well as for any individuals who may have witnessed the incident. We have counseling services available for anyone who may need assistance. We know that this is a concerning event for all of us. As the Bloomington Police Department continues to investigate how and why this isolated incident happened, we will provide our full cooperation.”
Aranda is Hispanic.
I don’t think that is enough in a public place like that- multiple stories off the ground. That is my point. Even a little horseplay can end in disaster. If a 6 foot tall blind person stumbles into it then they likely going over.

I think this was one of our homegrown crazies.
I couldn’t even read what the mother said without crying tonight. I watched my boy like a hawk when we were on the upper floors when he was young. I hate heights.
Some stranger hurling a 5 year old boy over the side of the third floor is unimaginable.

I wonder who/what is the source of that report. That's incredibly irresponsible, at best, maybe vicious calumny.
Breaking news reports are always unreliable.
And who knows, maybe the report was right and a patsy got charged. As it has a political angle, no amount of foul play can be definitively ruled out.
