Effort to stop Interstate 73 to Myrtle Beach clears hurdle in federal court

A proposed interstate into Myrtle Beach might be further delayed after a judge rejected most efforts to dismiss a lawsuit that raises concerns with the roads’ environmental impacts.

It’s another chapter in the longstanding effort to bring Interstate 73 to the Grand Strand.

The proposed Interstate 73 would run from Michigan to Myrtle Beach with about 75 miles of highway in South Carolina. Officials have long discussed the need for the route to help ease congestion and to serve as an alternative hurricane evacuation route.

Late in 2017, the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League sued the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Agency, the federal Department of Transportation and several officials over the proposed highway.

The conservation league said the I-73 project would cost $3.8 billion and destroy hundreds of acres of freshwater wetlands, according to court records.

The suit argued federal officials violated their responsibilities in several aspects of the project, including approving permits under the Clean Water Act.

South Carolina’s Coastal Conservation League also questioned the federal agencies’ reliance on a 10-year-old environmental study and “reevaluations” instead of undertaking a supplemental study.

There are cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternatives to the proposed highway, the conservation group stated.

The small towns and maze like routing of state highways to get to MB from the West or NW is an interesting drive. Especially so when it’s dark.

What’s your solution to the congestion problem you observed?
.........................................
Here’s a suggestion. There are thousands of acres within a half hour shuttle drive of the beach. Why not create several huge parking plazas, charge a buck a day to park and a buck to take the shuttle to the beach. Problem solved! I know, there will be a thousand reasons why it can’t be done, but the only valid one is simply a lack of the political will needed to get it done.

No one goes to myrtle Beach any more...going down down down...infested with crime!

Of course you’re dead right about MB going down. Thanks to the PC crowd it’s become nothing but another sh*thole ghetto.

The environmentalists will sue over the huge parking lots for the same reason they sued over the proposed Interstate: land use and destruction of alleged wetlands.

No one goes to myrtle Beach any more...

I haven't been in maybe 30 years, and it's only a 3-hour drive for me.

2 hours for me but about the dame.

When I first heard of this proposed interstate in the 80s my first thought was “why? The only purpose it could serve is to bring down cars from Detroit and hitmen.” I still believe that.

Myrtle Beach is a prime example of the rule that, when an area has some attraction that makes people want to go there the flow will increase until ultimately the people destroy what drew them there in the first place. I have lived my entire life except for maybe five years total within 120 miles and the past 47 years within 70 miles and for years I went to Myrtle Beach air base at least once a week as a tech rep. I have zero desire to go there now. Of course I’m an old man now but I don’t think I would want to go if I were young again.

There are a lot of efforts going on to improve Myrtle Beach. The new mayor is a believer in God it has taken many steps to clean it up here.

The churches are getting more and more active in the area and prayer walks and talks are happening weekly. I was part of the team at the Boardwalk yesterday.

A lot of efforts are occurring, it just takes some time to turn it.

And don’t forget drug-infested too! My family had a house in Cherry Grove when I was a child (long time ago :0). After my uncle passed away the family sold it. Two years ago my husband and I took our then 7 year old daughter there for a day trip. It is about the only area of the beach not to succumb to the infestation of drugs, crime, and liberals.

This Interstate has been allegedly being built for over 20 years. I’ll be surprised if its ever built.
