MONTICELLO, Iowa (AP) — Federal investigators say a small plane crash that killed a 90-year-old pilot near an eastern Iowa airport was likely caused by the pilot’s decision to allow his large dog near the flight controls.

The final National Transportation Safety Board report says investigators don’t know for certain what caused the single-engine aircraft to go down in a cornfield in June 2017 near Monticello Regional Airport. However, the report says, the dog that weighed about 75 pounds likely came in “contact with the flight controls during landing, which resulted in the pilot’s loss of airplane control.”

One of my pet peeves is seeing dogs not crated while in a car. Dogs won’t survive an airbag deployment nor will they fare well being thrown from the back of the car to the front in a minor accident.

I travel with my dogs in high impact crates which are secured to the floor of the vehicle.

Even a loose crate in a car is better than a dog moving about or on the lap.

My dad is 88 and just passed, with flying colors, his FAA physical required to fly his own small aircraft.

He’s a genetic freak, but I still wouldn’t fly with him ;)

Read up a bit on the license and sounds like just the thing for getting back into flying for fun...Looks like training is about half the cost of Private Pilot...

Access to an aircraft in the category might be a hurdle, but looks like a Cessna 150 might fall within specs...

My flying days are over, but go for it...Happy Landings!

Yeah, but he was one of those folks who brought nothing to the table but their appetite. That gets old quick.

The potheads I’ve known were annoying as hell when they smoked.. but when sober they were brilliant. That’s probably the exception to the norm.
