Theres a term called zeroing at the heart of this World Trade Organization decision that supports President Trump, Secretary Ross and USTR Lighthizer.
When an industry product like Canadian softwood lumber is shipped into the U.S. for sale at a lower price than exists in Canada, the U.S. Commerce department calls that dumping. If the Canadian product is the same or higher in the U.S. as it is in Canada there is no dumping. No dumping is a zero or normal price differential; hence zeroing.

When you learn of things like this, we learn that the rest of the world has been bending us over a barrel for too effin' long. And that the whores in Congress, government and Wall St have been willing participants and getting fat and happy because of it.
When Ross was nominated, lots of folks criticized him for how he made his money, as a corporate raider type. Well, with what Ross, Lighthizer and Mnuchin have been doing, you'd be hard pressed to argue against them being part of a team that is saving this country as I type. I guess this is what happens when you have professionals doing the work, instead of a bunch of radical Left-wing government diplomats and bureaucrats at the table, who could give a damn about anyone or anything, except what's being served for lunch. As the Candidate Trump said(I paraphrase) during his campaign...I'd have guys so nasty negotiating our trade deals, that you wouldn't let them in your house for dinner, but they'd get the best deal for the US that can be got....or something like that.
This is amazing. Great article, plainly written and easily understandable instead of some WSJ jargon. And for me, at least, I now see how the chinese were raping us on aluminum and steel.
I guess this is how Airbus can compete with Boeing. And from a few headlines I've seen recently, it would appear that the countries that are partners in Airbus seem to be a little concerned over something on the horizon.
so, for me, the price of a 2 x 4 just went up 30%.... should i be dancing in the streets?
my problem is i live on a fixed income and still have work to do on the homestead. a 30% increase in the cost of material hits me hard.
since you brought this up, how many unemployed loggers are there in the US?
Softwood Lumber.
Only last week, I read an article about Canadian liberals complaining that the US is buying their softwood for less than they sell it for in Canada. The liberals think it’s UNFAIR to sell to the US for lower prices even though the US buys many times more than the Canadian customers. [I guess they never heard of the economics of quantity].
Also, they say we are wasting their softwood, because a large amount of it is used in the softer toilet paper products.
Basically they don’t want Americans to have soft TP.
Move to Canada.
Paying 30% more for a 2x4 is really a small matter compared to what might happen. If we can wrestle away from China all the manufacturing jobs the globalists sent there, the price of most anything will go up.
I think getting the Chinese to produce a half decent product for practically nothing is what made our billionaires.
Personally I want to see the jobs move back home. The wage/price/inflation thingy will eventually level off and we will adjust. And we will not be helping our communist buddies in China rebuild their military.
BS. In Maine you see the logs loaded on trucks going to Canada and back into Maine as lumber due to Canadian tariffs.
i am attempting to have a debate on this subject, and possibly learn something in the process. responses like yours are better suited for DU. go over there and post with the non intellectual crowd.
In Oregon, where I live, the spotted owl retired most of them 20 years ago.
The few that remain are being put out of business by the original BLM (Bureau of Land Management) which no longer understands that trees are a renewable resource.
This is the same prediction critics make every damn time Trump wins on trade. Never happens. The minute your 2 x 4 actually goes up 30%, get back to us.
Well never hear from you again, which would be too soon.
so nice to hear from people who will not even entertain the view of another...... go away now
I remember when Perot was campaigning. In one of his TV ads he said that if we knew about how our trade deals were being made, we would be sick. President Trump is the first one to actually DO something about it.
As expected--you've been getting it "cheap" for a good while now.
