Yep! They also sell little tins of kippered herring “snacks” that are pretty good.
Kippered herring are smoked and very good. I grew up on them.
Ah so... In those days, they didn't have refrigeration. Preservation was often accomplished by salting. I guess I should've said I never add salt to any fish I eat because it always seems to make it too salty for me.
